Work on paper - The Day the Lake Caught Fire 1868, A Reminiscence of the Early Days of Ballarat by Mr R. Kerr, 1920
Early residents of Ballarat were invited by the Mayor to a reunion to recall memories of Ballarat's early days. There is R. Kerr's recollection of Ballarat's first water supply coming from Lake Wendouree and, in 1868, the Lake was dry. These are interesting historical events given the more recent millennial drought.A 1/4 of a page of print with heading and and author cited after the last small paragraph.Nonejohn garner, doctor john garner, ballarat botanical gardens, friends of ballarat botanical gardens, lake wendouree, yuille's swamp, ballarat water supply, john garner collection, gardens, ballarat -

´This is the bag carried by the Keeper of the Dead, in which he keeps his relics of the dead, the ritual objects of his trade and the special talisman to protect both himself and his charges from harm. He casts the Bones in regular protection ceremonies, and is sought after secretly by people who want to find out the spiritual state of their loved ones. Some think he can predict the future with unfailing accuracy, though few dare to seek him out for such a purpose.´ -Inga Hunter -

Work on paper (item) - Photograph, 2 Metery Road, Eltham South
Robert and Ada Zull built an Alistair Knox designed house at 2 (lot 8) Metery Road, Eltham, a one acre property for their family of five in the mid 1960s. This series of photographs shows the newly built house and pagoda, building rubble and wet conditions at the time. Susan Bennett, nee Zull's reminiscences are published in EDHS Newsletter, February and April 2020. ".. Outside was a mess of wet, sticky clay that made access to the house difficult... " This series of photographs together with the account of personal remiscences provide a unique document of the construction of an Alistair Knox designed home. Knox was a pioneer in the use of mudbricks and recycled materials and is significant to his contribution of this style of architecture in Eltham and the wider Shire of Nillumbik.zull family, eltham south, 2 metery road, alistair knox, construction, mud -

Decorative object - Sampler, 1847
When removed from the frame, in Sept 1999, for conservation work it was found that probably on three previous re-framings the work had been tacked as the tack heads are clearly visible around the edge and staple marks are also present. The conservator was able to remove some rust but not the staple marks. She feels the 'browning' of the material was caused by the wooden board which the sampler was mounted on.|The conservator stated that the material was cotton 'Tiffany' fabric.Framed sampler of cross stitch headed 'Prudence' 'Hear the Words of Prudence, give heed unto her councils and shore them in your heart. Her maxims are universal and all her virtues lean apon her. She is the guide and mistress of human life. Put a bridle on thy tongue , set a guard before thy lips lest the words of thine own mouth destroy thy peace. Let him that scoffed at the lame take care that he hurt not himself. Whosoever speaketh of anothers failings with pleasure shall hear of his own with bitterness of heart. of much speaking cometh repentance but in silence is safety'|Embroidered trees and buds, flowers, baskets all stylized.
