'After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German). The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view.' This article highlights the popularity of Lake Wendouree for leisure time activities and the account of a suicide in 1884.Elizabeth Murphy's suicide at Lake Wendouree contrasts with the usual happy reports of activities at the Lake and was selected over 100 years later perhaps to give another perspective on Ballarat Life.2/3 of a page of newspaper print with a large black and white picture, mid- page of people paddling in Lake Wendouree in 18884Nonejohn garner, doctor john garner, ballarat botanic gardens, friends of ballarat botanical gardens, lake wendouree, boating, picnicking, paddling, suicide, elizabeth murphy, william pritchard, 1884, ballarat star, john garner collection, gardens, ballarat -

Work on paper - Bookplate, ‘Johannes Gutenberg Ex Libris John Gartner’
John Gartner was a fine printer and publisher, an author, a noted philatelist, and also collector of Australian banknotes and coins. He was born on 16 July 1914 and was largely self-educated, leaving school at fourteen for work following the death of his father. Gartner developed a strong interest in the history of typography and printing and was apprenticed at the Advocate where his father had been a linotype operator. Aged 17, Gartner bought a hand press and some fonts of type, and in 1937 acquired a platen press from which he set and printed his private press books, published under the imprint of The Hawthorn Press. Gartner had a strong collection of Australian bookplates. He also looked at the work of artists overseas and commissioned personal plates. He subsequently built an international collection with preference for artists who printed from wood. His initial searches were in Belgium and Holland.(http://www3.slv.vic.gov.au/latrobejournal/issue/latrobe-84/t1-g-t7.html) A line drawing/portrait of presumably Johannes Gutenberg sits within an oval shape formed by the titlebookplate, printmaking, australian bookplate design award, keith wingrove memorial trust, john gartner -
