Mixed media - Toy, Marbles, Late 19th century
There is evidence of the game of marbles in the ruins of Pompeii and the tombs of Egyptians as well as early American Indians. The earliest marbles were simply rounded stones which had been polished but this was refined to handmade versions made of clay, stone and glass. It was in the late 19th century that mass production began and it gives testament to the popularity of the game that the Dyke factory of Ohio could produce 1,000,000 marbles a day. It was around 1915 that the mass production of glass marbles began. The game reached the height of popularity in the 1920-1930’s. Many were prized for their designs. The game of marbles was one of the most common games played universally, from childhood hence has a strong link with people of all ages and cultures. Five marbles in glass jar. All are various sizes ranging from large yellow streaked with red and blue, black striped with white, marbled tan, clear with multi coloured streaks and bright blue. Shapes are roughly spherical. Materials range from glass to glazed and stone. Three have pontil marks either on end.The lid of the jar has Nestle vacuumed sealed for extra protection. Use special key to open. Old sticker on base with 173 written in black lead pencil. toys, marbles, children's games, warrnambool, handmade marbles, glass marbles, clay marbles, agate marbles -

Mixed media, Inga Hunter, Nrat-tuan Boat Leader's Robe, 1986-1989
“Apart from the vast and sophisticated space fleet, the only forms of transport used by the Nrati-Tuan are boats and rafts. All the inhabitants are more at home in the water than on the land, but some transport is necessary, both for people and freight. Every family has at least two boats and an assortment of rafts. Many thousands live entirely on boats and never set foot on any form of land, even avoiding the floating islands. The Boatleader is really a leading transport official; the top office in a long chain of others, from the smallest boat-boy, to the night boatwatches who keep the waterways safe for traffic. There are several ranks of Boatleader, whose major function is to settle disputes about water rights and water paths. Courts of dispute sit regularly, handling the hundreds of problems which arise about water use, headed by a Boatleader of one rank or another. This robe is worn by the most senior of all. He is the representative of water rights at the great Court of the Imperium. To the Nrat-Tuan it is more a sacrifice than an honour to attend the Court, because none find it easy to stay on still, dry land for extended periods of time. Nrati-Tuan delegates to the Irusaqui Court are rewarded with high honours on their planet, to show public respect and gratitude for their endurance.” -Inga Hunter -

Made by the City of Port Melbourne for the demonstrations before and after the forced amalgamation by the Jeff Kennett State Government of the City of Port Melbourne with the Cities of South Melbourne and St Kilda to form the City of Port Phillip. First demonstation was against the City of Melbourne Act which excised 42% of Port Melbourne's rate base (Fishermens Bend) and so laid the groundwork for amalgamation afterwards because Port Melbourne could not survive on the remaining rates. As the 100th anniversary approaches of the opening of the Mitcham Post Office at the corner of Station Street and Whitehorse Road, the recording of the history of the building is appropriate. Brian Millane's grandfather, Patrick Joseph Markham commissioned the building; his wife, Bertha Jane (nee Cruse) was the Mitcham postmistress from 1913 to 1943; and their daughter, Mary Millane, (nee Markham) was acting postmistress on several occasions and operated a shop in the building from 1944 to 1957. This talk records elements of the postal service in Mitcham, the locations of post offices and people involved in mail services from about 1900 to 1944.The speaker not only lived in the post office building from 1944 to 1957 but also had access to historically relevant documents and oral accounts of events and facts related to the building and postal services. The transcript incorporates many images and discussion of their importance in understanding the operations and way of life within the building.patrick joseph markham, bertha jane markham, mary elizabeth millane (nee markham), harold ernest millane, eliza mcglone nee o'mara, john mcglone -
