Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Fawns Brewery, High Street, circa 1860. James Fawns arrived on the Bendigo diggings in 1853 and soon established a brewery near the Foundry Arms Hotel in Old High Street, Golden Square. He later closed this brewery and erected an establishment in High Street known as the London Brewery. Colour transparency (slide) created in June 1976 during a tour by the Junior National Trust, which was led by members of Kew Historical Society. The collection of 21 slides reveals that the tour covered all parts of Kew, but focused understandably on heritage buildings and sites.Image of an historic place in Kew that can be dated to an exact time and place. The Victorian Historic Buildings Register describes the building as: ""Studley House", 15 Nolan Avenue Kew is an early house, extensively added to, which is of architectural importance in its present form and has important historical associations with John Hodgson, an early settler in the district and with subsequent owners. The first part of the house is an early and particularly fine example of the Italianate style in Victoria. The later additions dwarf the original house but are of interest in their own right. Images from a Legacy Bowls tournament, there are people in watching the presentation at the end. Names of the legatees are not known. The trophy awarded to the winner was named after Sir Dallas Brooks who was a patron of Melbourne Legacy when he was Governor of Victoria (1949-1963). Melbourne Legacy held regular bowls tournaments for Legatees. Some events were as a fundraiser for Legacy and well as a social event for legatees. The date is estimated to be the 1960s as it was with other slides from that period. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. A newspaper cutting from 1934 showing the crowd at the opening ceremony of the Shrine of Remembrance. The Shrine was officially opened by the Duke of Gloucester. The caption says 'Marshalled at the Shrine in hundreds of thousands, troops of all arms and services returned soldiers of Australian, British and Dominion units, and a countless mass of citizens, yesterday witnessed the ceremony of dedication performed by the Duke of Gloucester. This aerial view of the vast crows was taken as the Duke and his escort arrived at the southern steps.Early legatees fought hard to have the Shrine of Remembrance accepted as the preferred form of commemoration of the first World War. Legatees would organise collection of wood from the country and distribute it to widows in metropolitan Melbourne. Other slides show the cutting and loading of wood and delivery to widows in metropolitan Melbourne. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. In many cases the original images were not well focussed and the digital image the best available.A record of Legacy helping widows by sourcing, supplying and delivering firewood.
