Sign - Warning Sign - Children's carriages, "Children's Carriages .....", c1920
One of a group of signs that were fitted into tramcars in Ballarat, giving instructions to passengers about prams, behaviour, smoking, fare payment, talking to the motorman, instructions or information to drivers etc. Yields information about the sign manufacture, demonstrates the type of signs provided in tramcars.Set of four Enamel signs, black capital letters and lines on white background, titled "Children's Carriages which fold compactly may be permitted on cars at conductors discretion and owner's risk". One of a number similar signs donated to the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society by the SEC following closure of the Ballarat Tramways system in 1971. Sign has a black enamel backing, with marks from the enamelling process. Used by the MMTB in an attempt to keep tram tracks clear of motor cars. It seldom worked. Signs would have been fixed to the ends of a tram so it could be seen by motorists. Victoria Hill, accessed from Marong Road, was one of the richest areas on the Bendigo goldfields and was the beginning of reef mining as opposed to alluvial mining. Between 1853 and 1861 there were 16 claims registered on Victoria Hill. Between 1908 and 1910 it was the site of the world's deepest shaft (1365-1406 meters)Today it provides interpretive walks that include sites such as an open-cut mine (1850's), poppet head, quartz crushing battery (1930's) and the foundations of George Lancell's 180 mine. Nelse Lodge was established in Falls Creek c1958 probably by Des Crosser. It was later purchased by Bob Scott (Scotty). He was killed during a tragic accident during the construction of the Sun Valley T-bar. In 1973, Bob's widow sold Nelse Lodge to Jack and Elva Smith who were proprietors at the time this brochure was published.This brochure is significant because it is linked to one of the early lodges established in Falls Creek. Ceremonial object - Goblet cover, 1907 to mid 20th century
This item is part of the collection of Ecclesiastical Linen once used by St. Andrews Anglican Church on the corner of the Esplanade and 14 Drummond St, Dennington, Victoria. The first Anglican service was conducted on December 22nd, 1907. The church was decommissioned in January 2003. This item is part of the Ecclesiastical Linen collection, which is significant for its examples of handworked embroidery and drawn-thread work from the early 20th century. The items are also examples of a collection used for religious services during this period. The Ecclesiastical Linen is also significant for its association with the early development of the local township of Dennington and the importance the the community of setting aside land in the 1850's for the purpose of religious worship. The Ecclesiastical Linen is also significant for its connection to St Andrews Anglican Church, Dennington. The church was funded and attended by the local community in the early 1900's and is now listed on the Victorian Heritage Database (VHD 118083) as a building of historical and social significance. Goblet cover, part of a set of Ecclesiastical Linen once used in St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Dennington, Victoria, between the years 1907 and 2003. The 31-acre (13 ha) cemetery site was reserved in 1855 and trustees were first appointed in 1858. A site plan was drawn up by Frederick Acheson, a civil engineer in the Public Lands Office, with the layout segregated by religious denomination, a common occurrence at the time. The first burial took place in 1859. The rules were gazetted rather than published as guidelines as the cemetery was constituted under and act of parliament. Early publication about the Boroondara General Cemetery which, in addition to providing public guidelines, reflects the social and spiritual values of the period.Rules and regulations of the Boroondara General Cemetery.
