The Ballarat School of Mines was established in 1870 through initiatives of the Ballarat Mining Board which felt there was a need for such an institution because of the declining number of mine managers for the goldfields. The Shillinglaw Cottage Preservation Committee, also known as The Shillinglaw Cottage Preservation Society, also known as the Friends of the Shillinglaw Cottage collated and published a community cookbook "Flavour of Eltham", first published in 1964 to raise funds for the preservation and re-location of this historical cottage in Eltham. Rob Upson became a volunteer at the Bendigo Visitor Centre in 1998. The Staff produced a monthly newsletter called ‘The Grapevine’. Being reasonably new to Bendigo, Rob became interested in its history and began writing articles to share with the volunteers. He called them ‘Grapevine Cuttings’ under the pen name of ‘Merlot’. Rob wrote about 90 articles over a period of 12 years until ‘The Grapevine’ was finally pruned and shutdown. ABC Radio show 'Hindsight" which looks at the historical, and not so historical, limitations that were placed on blind and vision impaired people through the twentieth century. Through interviews with various people who lost or were born with limited or no sight as well as historian Judith Buckrich, the changes over the last 150 years about the politics of the blind and the thinking around it are reflected upon. From the first institute for the blind set up in Victoria in 1866, there have been restrictions on conditions, access of service, working life, education, travel, voting rights, attitudes on using white canes or dog guides, pensions, workers rights, and socialising between blind men and women.
