Sign - Gambling on Board's premises, Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), c1960
Gambling at Tram Depots was common and resulted in the loss of wages. See attached document with notes by Peter Bruce. The MMTB tried to restrict it, but it still took place. The letters of the completed banner were made by different churches within in the presbytery and spelled a sentence, presumably "BUILD YOUR CHURCH LORD!" Orbost was one of the churches that had the finished banner on display. On of 24 small banners with tabs at the top of each for hanging on a rod. 19 have large blue letters appliqued on them. Twenty two of the banners are roughly square and two are smaller and oblong. Three have no letters and are used as spacers in the four word sentence that the letters make. The banners are decorated with rural and coastal images. Sheet metal signs mounted onto 2 metal brackets top and bottom by rivets. Mounted on wood pole so it faced outwards at right angles. On both faces in black paint on white background is "Trams Leave here for Gardens, View Point, Sebastopol." This sign was used in the Billiard room of the Soldiers Memorial Institute Bendigo RSL. Years ago when the Billiard room had a section divided off for part of a Caretakers Residence it was placed on the internal roof of the residence. It was mainly used at RSL meetings. When the RSL Meetings moved to the B&DRSL Club Inc it was used during the day when the Museum was open. After the renovations to the Soldiers memorial in 2018 it was placed in what is now the Building & RSL History room of the BMM.Sign, timber construction box shape, illuminated faces front and rear with the RSL Logo in colour. Sign, Australian Electric Traction Association (AETA), "Australian Electric Traction Association Special Car", 1950's
Sign, painted onto a MMTB auxiliary destination board of the type that could hang on the front of a Melbourne tram car with the words "Australian Electric Traction Association Special Car". Used for special tours by the AETA. Metal sign, fitted with metal hanging brackets, riveted to sign on both sides. Manufactured by rolling the outer edges over a 4mm diameter steel rod. Has been painted over a an old sign "Direct to Trotting Showgrounds??? via Abbotsford St 3d". Second sign painted over a sign that had on one side "Via Elsternwick" and "Via Balaclava Road". The signs were received wrapped in part of the "The Age, Thursday March 23 1961" - sample retained - see image 4. Sign, A. Simpson and Son Limited Enamellers of Pirie St Adelaide, "Passengers are requested ....."
One of a group of signs that were fitted into tramcars in Ballarat, giving instructions to passengers about prams, behaviour, smoking, fare payment, talking to the motorman, instructions or information to drivers etc. Yields information about the sign manufacture, demonstrates the type of signs provided in tramcars.Enamel sign, black capital letters and lines on white background, titled "Passengers are requested not to enter into conversation with the motorman when tram is in motion". One of a number similar signs donated to the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society by the SEC following closure of the Ballarat Tramways system in 1971. Sign has a black enamel backing, with marks from the enamelling process. On the rear is part of a paper sign about mounting the sign with screws and not using nails and the name of the manufacturer "Simpson & S? Pirie Street......" Demonstrates the signage used by the SEC (and the MMTB) to indicate tram stops and in particular compulsory tram stops. Has a strong association with the donor, Warrington Cameron.Piece of sheet steel folded to give an upstand or method of attachment to a pole, enamelled with red, white and black paint for use at tram stops. Small red band at top, white band with letters CARS STOP HERE and large red band underneath, on both sides to indicate to drivers a compulsory stop- That is all tram to stop at the location. The seal of the former City of Kew is held in the collection of the City of Boroondara, as is the Mayoral Chain of Office. The original design was circular and cast in high relief to allow impressions to be made. Later versions such as this modernise the style for a range of purposes.Four colour version of the City of Kew Crest, adopted by the Municipality in 1861 for use in its circular seal but later adapted as in this version for printing or for identification. There are two examples this version: both transfers designed to be affixed to Council vehicles. The collection includes 11 copies of the large transfers and one copy of the smaller version. Indicated or provided a location to tram drivers and passengers of a tram stop that trams had to be hailed or signaled to stop or to alight. Most tram stops were of this style.Demonstrates the form of tram stop that the MMTB used in Melbourne that trams had to be signaled to stop at. Phased out from the mid 1970's.
