An entry ticket to Manical Mechanicals in Marysville in Victoria.An entry ticket to Manical Mechanicals in Marysville in Victoria. Manical Mechanicals was owned and operated by Marg and Alistair Mackie in Murchison Street in Marysville in Victoria. It offered a display of various engineering wonders of the world all made from Meccano. There was also a selection of models, toys and other items that all moved. The Meccano models were all built by Doug Wilson who lived in Wangaratta in Victoria. In 1937, when he was 12, Doug won first prize at Brunswick Technical School for making a Meccano model aeroplane with three rotating propellers. Colour slide of Governor Delacombe autographing books for some young girls at Government House for a Legacy Christmas party in the 1960s. Melbourne Legacy held an annual Christmas Party for Junior Legatees and Widows at Government House for many years. Junior Legatees were given gifts. The books may have been gifts. The exact date is not known but there are 15 slides in the same white mount which appear to be the same event (02913 - 02924). Governor Delacombe is in some the photos so they are post 1963 when he became Governor. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. Robin Boyd Foundation
Slide, Robin Boyd, 1956-1957
Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. Robin and Patricia Boyd, with their youngest daughter Suzy, were based in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the year. Boyd gave some lectures at MIT and he was also invited to give lectures at many other universities, allowing him to travel widely within the USA, especially on the East Coast. This gave him the opportunity to meet architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Paul Rudolph and many others, and visit the offices of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and places like Taliesin and the General Motors Technical Center Detroit. On the way home, the Boyds visited London, Berlin, Paris and Le Corbusier’s Ronchamp Chapel in France.Colour slide in a mount. Object. Circular in shape and 22 cms in diameter. The fan has a bamboo handle 26.5 cms long. Long strands of woven cane have been machine stitched into a circular shape, with the outside round in green dyed cane. (twenty rows of woven can make up the fan). Sheet steel folded to give a top & bottom strengthening. With SEC green paint on back, yellow painted face & lettered PAY AS YOU ENTER in black paint. Used on each tram to indicate to boarding passengers, to pay the motorman as they entered the tram. If not in use was turned to face away from boarding passengers. Ballarat trams fitted with wooden slides on either side of drivers windows, so that they could face the respective open door. Also use by the BTM for similar purposes. Robin Boyd was appointed Exhibits Architect for the Australian Pavilion at Expo ‘70 in Osaka and travelled to Osaka several times in 1969-1970. Boyd designed the innovative Space Tube, which had over 25 exhibition boxes, projecting from it. Amongst the topics covered were Australian scientific innovation (including brain research, immunology, Antarctic research, Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Power Scheme, rainmaking, and the night sky), Australian sport, house interiors, car manufacturing, Australian music and art, and Japanese-Australian relations.Colour slide in a mount. Invitation to the official opening of the Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden at the City Gardens, Blessington Street St Kilda (now the St Kilda Botanical Gardens) on 18 November 1950. Alister Clark was a foundation member of the National Rose Society of Victoria in 1900 and served as its president. He put great effort and skill into developing new varieties that were grown throughout Australia and were highly regarded in the USA.
