Penleigh Boyd, Robin and Patricia Boyd's son, writes “Prior to 1950 Robin, like most other amateur or hobby photographers, took black and white printed photographs. The oldest slides date from 1950 when Robin and Patricia travelled to Europe on Robin’s Robert Haddon Travelling Scholarship.” In 1948 Robin Boyd was awarded ‘joint first place’ in the Robert Haddon competition for his design of Mildura art gallery. The scholarship helped fund their first overseas trip. Robin and Patricia were passengers on the Greek ship “Cyrenia” departing in May 1950, passing through the Suez Canal and landing in Genoa five weeks later. For six months, they travelled extensively throughout Europe (predominantly driving themselves) - France, Italy, United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain.Colour slide in a mount. World Environment Day was established by in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Two years later, in 1974 the first World Environment Day was held with the theme "Only One Earth" and is observed every year on June 5 to encourage awareness and environmental protection. Colour slide of two legatees and a school boy near a large number of toys collected for distribution. One man is Ivan Layton the CEO of Legacy for 30 years. There were wooden rocking horses and planes. Also soft toys such as Humpty Dumpty, teddies and koalas. The toys were part of an arrangement with the Department of Education. Schools would produce the toys, often in wood work classes and they were donated to Legacy and Carry On. The toys were given to Junior Legatees at the Government House Christmas Party. Excess toys were passed to a dozen additional charities. The scheme started in 1949 and by 1962 over 8,200 toys were donated, from 201 schools. The total to that date was over 72,500 toys. It appears to be 1963 as there was space for the tally to be completed. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. Dugout Night is an annual event where Legatees gather and enjoy the company of fellow Legatees ("comradeship"), usually in April, close to Anzac Day. A dugout in wartime provides protection for soldiers from small arms fire, artillery bombardment and attack from the air. The sign could have been made to publicise Dugout night or most likely as a caption for photographs of the event displayed at Legacy House.Legatees supported each other by coming together for various events throughout the year. Dated 1886 on it's facade, the first listing in Sands & MacDougall Directories for O'Brien's Terrace does not occur until 1891. However, Mr A BROWN is noted as running his hairdressing business at this address from 1887. In 1896 Port Melbourne streets were renumbered and the address of his premises became 149 Bay Street. From that period it has been used as a hairdressing establishment by a number of people & companies. In 1901 the second in a series of hairdressers occupied the premises and the CODESPOTI brothers [see updated information below] continued the tradition when they took over the premises in 1985, naming their business, Bayside Barber Shop. Update July 2024: Reza SABAHI, who currently operates as a barber from the same shop, contacted us with updated information. Domenic CODESPOTI was Tony CODESPOTI's father.
