The St Kilda Seaside Lounge, later known as the St Kilda Soldiers’ Lounge, was opened by the St Kilda Patriotic League and the YMCA in 1915, and run by Mrs Lucie Hallenstein. Located in the refreshment rooms of the former Comedy Theatre, Lower Esplanade, it provided a place for returned soldiers to relax and socialise. By mid-1916 the average weekly attendance had reached eight hundred servicemen. The first Seafarers Service was held on 23 October 1905 in the St Paul's Cathedral in London to celebrate the Centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson on 21 October 1805. Reverend Alfred Gurney Goldsmith launched the first Seafarers Service two years later and the first service was held on Sunday 10 November 1907.The service continue to reflect the full range of the maritime activities in Australia. Representatives come from the Royal and Merchant Navies, the commercial world, shipping companies, mission and philanthropic societies, veterans’ associations, labour unions, youth and leisure organisations, but anyone is welcome to attend.Small flyer in cream colour paper and printed in blue ink. A website, no longer accessible, advised that the ticket was introduced on 27-8-2006 and was in use until the introduction of Myki tickets. Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge. Items in the collection dates from the 1940s to the 1960s. The Kew Recreation Hall (Wellington Street) and later the Kew City Hall (Cotham Road) were major locations in suburban Melbourne in the postwar period for civic and private events including theatre productions and exhibitions. The Arthur Dear Collection (in conjunction with the scrapbooks compiled by Marion Tilley) provide a comprehensive snapshot of performing arts in Kew during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The collection includes valuable data about performances, performers, directors etc., during this period. Demonstrates a souvenir item for the opening of the electric tramways in Ballarat in the form of a postcard which has actually been used to send a message. Has a strong association with the people who sent and received the card.Postcard size Souvenir Tram ticket, printed using blue ink on one side with fare, photos of power station, engine room, boiler room and a tram & No.10344 stamped on edge. On reverse side is space for stamp, address etc., - with line & "postcard' etc., printed in red ink. Letter/note to Ethel Hodgson of Lethbridge, stamped in Ballarat on 26-8-1905. Fares given on card are : Mount Pleasant and Orphanage and Grenville St. 3d, or Grenville St. and Tram sheds 3d. Printed in a blue/grey ink of various shades onto a white card. Acted as a souvenir card. One Penny stamp, with Ballarat Cancellation stamp and - "5" stamped on the top of the postage stamp.
