Slide - photograph, colour, Whittlesea Christ Church, Sunday School Pupils, c.1956-1966
In 1863 a Whittlesea resident Thomas Wills donated fifteen acres of land to the Church of England for the use of promoting the Christian religion within the area. More specifically though Wills directed that part of this land was for the erection of a building for public worship and of a dwelling for the Minister duly appointed. Thomas Wills himself laid the foundation stone on 14 July 1864 and by August 1865 the building was completed. The Church was finally opened on Sunday 25th February 1866 by Bishop Perry of Melbourne who had stayed the weekend at “Braemore” the home of the Sherwins. The first Minister appointed by the Bishop was the Rev. W. McGennet from Bunninyong. The bell that originally hung in the tower was lowered in 1909 when its weight endangered the structure of the Church. Rev. William McGennett conducted his first service in Christ Church on 2nd March 1866. In the absence of the vicarage which was erected several years later the accommodation for Rev. McGennett was provided at Taylor’s Carriers Arms Hotel which stood at the corner of Jack’s Creek and Yea Roads. A brick vicarage was erected nearby, several years after the Church. Construction of stage one of the church hall commenced in 1955, with final completion in 1966. 35mm colour positive transparency (1 of 17) Card mount - Kodachrome Transparency whittlesea, christ church whittlesea, sunday school, church, children -

Melbourne Legacy
Slide, Operation Float 1961, 1961
Three colour slides of a motor boat with children on board on ocean for Operation Float. Operation Float was an event run by Melbourne Legacy to take Junior legatees on an outing. It could have been to naval boats such as HMAS Cerberus or to a Yacht club. It gave the junior legatees the opportunity to see a naval boat in action, spend time on the water or try sailing. Part of a set of slides that are printed on Ektachrome and discoloured to a pink tinge. The year is possibly 1961 as one slide has the date on it. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. In many cases the original images were not well focussed and the digital image the best available.A record of outings being organised for children.Colour slide x 3 of a motor boat in Kodak Ektachrome cardboard mount with yellow and blue print.Printed on front 'Made in USA' in blue ink. Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. DIGGERS AND MINERS, c1851
Diggers & Mining. Diggers and miners. After 1861, many new fields were discovered - e.g., Walhalla (1863), Landsborough (1864), Alexandra (1867), Rheola (1868), Turton's Creek (1872; and new diggings were established on some of the older fields - e.g., Cathcart (near Ararat) in 1864, and at Fiddler's Creek (Avoca) in 1868. But these rushes do not belong to the gold era proper. And both before and for many years after 1861, there were scores of small diggings - after 1861, there were scores of small diggings - too numerous to mention - in Victoria. Markings: 16 994:LIF I. Port Melbourne Historical & Preservation Society
Poster, John KIRBY, Bayside Barber Shop, June 2010
Dated 1886 on it's facade, the first listing in Sands & MacDougall Directories for O'Brien's Terrace does not occur until 1891. However, Mr A BROWN is noted as running his hairdressing business at this address from 1887. In 1896 Port Melbourne streets were renumbered and the address of his premises became 149 Bay Street. From that period it has been used as a hairdressing establishment by a number of people & companies. In 1901 the second in a series of hairdressers occupied the premises and the CODESPOTI brothers [see updated information below] continued the tradition when they took over the premises in 1985, naming their business, Bayside Barber Shop. Update July 2024: Reza SABAHI, who currently operates as a barber from the same shop, contacted us with updated information. Domenic CODESPOTI was Tony CODESPOTI's father. Reza SABAHI took over the premises in September 2017 and operates it as Barbers of Port Melbourne proudly continuing the history of barbers at O'Brien's Terrace.A4 copy of poster for Bayside Barber Shop in O'BRIEN's Terrace, Port Melbourneo'brien's terrace, bayside barber shop, domenic codespoti, tony codespoti, mr a brown, charles skegg, a.c. fitzgerald, james burke, v clifford, b wilkins, a dowling, j r willoughby, mrs n wooding, charlie goldfarb, barbers of port melbourne, reza sabahi -
