The little boy's father worked for a gold mining company in Malaya. The boy and his mother made it out of Malaya to Bendigo safely. The father volunteered by joining the 4th Pahang Bn of the Federated States of Malaya, serial no 13428 and his rank was Sgt. He was a POW, worked on the Burma railway. The father, Desmond Vandergrift Giblin survived the War. Desmond Vandergrift Giblin has letters and his diary on the Aust War Memorial website.This is a pocket sized memo book. Mottled blue cover with white printing. The spine is dark blue. The cover is hard cardboard. Inside are numerous lined pages. The pages in the first section are used as a scrap book showing news clippings about fund raising for our POW's (Red Cross). 1st clipping shows a little boy, Ian Desmond Giblin, aged 2 yr 10 mth. The item is a hard cover book recording stock in 1890 for T.J. Connolly, Ironmongers, Sandhurst. Each handwritten page lists goods by location, quantity, description, prices with price total at the bottom of each page. Locations include shelves, floor, yard, factory, paint shop. Pages 1 to 164 have been numbered by hand. An alphabetical index list types of stock on unnumbered pages after page 165, followed by blank pages. The hard cover is patterned and shows some wearing at the corners and front and minimal wear on the back. The spine edge is red with considerable wear at the top and bottom. One ledger dates from 1955 to 1960 and the other ledger dates from 1970 to 1978.These two ledgers are of interest as a example of a Warrnambool produce store business in the second half of the 20th Century and as a source of information on the purchasers, people living in the Warrnambool area at that time..1 A ledger with brown corded fabric cover, a metal spine with leather trimming and gold strips. John Mitchell was born c. 1830 in Cornwall and travelled to Victoria with his father in 1853. Arriving in Bendigo they both worked as blacksmiths before his father returned to Cornwall. John plied his trade in Mundy Street, Bendigo before selling the business in 1865 after 11 years. Upon the discovery of gold in Western Australia, John travelled there and back three times before dying in Bendigo in 1902. He lived in Violet st., and left a wife, Elizabeth Hannah, and daughter, Mrs E Morris. Early business in Sandhurst in 1850s.An account book used by the John Mitchell to record the purchases and services made with his business. Records date from 1859 - 1868. The book has lost its front cover, but the back cover is still attached. The book is made up of several sections stitched together and bound with three pieces of cotton cloth. The pages are light blue with ruled columns. There are alphabetical tabs at the front of the book with lists of names. Individual customers are allocated a double page entry. Pages numbers are written at the top of pages. The book is in very poor condition having obvious signs of water and insect damage with visible patches of mold.
