Leisure object - Cattlin Horse Bridle
The horse bridle was owned by Heather May (Piper) who participated in many regional shows throughout her years. It is unclear how Heather acquired the bridle from W. Cattlin but 'she was generally interested in good riders and horses and saw the unique opportunity to acquire it'. (Steven May, Heather's son, email 2.4.25). The bridle was originally owned by W. Cattlin and it was used in 1913 at the Bendigo Show in a riding event. W. Cattlin was involved in many coursing events in the early 1900's. W. Cattlin is mentioned in a Bendigo Advertiser article 6th October, 1904, when he was competing at the Rochester Show. Leather bridle with metal bit and fine basket weave material reins. Card attached to bridle with hand written note: ' Bridle used by Mr. W. Cattlin at 1913 Bendigo Show/ now Heather Piper'.bendigo show, w. cattlin, bridle, leather, fabric, heather may -

Leisure object - Sheet music, A sprig of boronia, 1916
This is an early 20th century musical composition by a leading Tasmanian composer, Florence Hull (Mrs Arthur Kenny). It is a sentimental song as the ‘sprig of boronia’ is a withered one, kept as a relic of some past event. This music was printed in the Victorian School Paper for Grades 7 and 8 in 1918 and the proceeds of copies of one of the editions of this work were donated to the Hawthorn Red Cross in Melbourne. Florence Hull’s musical works and memoirs are in the Tasmanian Archives. Paul Dufault, who sang this song, was a leading Canadian tenor who toured Australia and Europe. He died in 1930 aged 57. This sheet music has significance as it was composed by a Tasmanian woman in the early 20th century and it represents the type of music popular in concert halls at the time. It has been in the Warrnambool and District Historical Society collection for many years. This is a four page piece of sheet music (cover plus two pages of music). The paper is cream-coloured, discoloured in places, with brown print on the back of the cover and black notation on the music pages. The front cover is in brown, yellow and green tonings, with a chromolithographic illustration of a Boronia flower spray and some music bars. The back of the cover has information on eight of Florence Hull’s other compositions with comments by critics. The pages have been torn and mended with adhesive tape.Front Cover: ‘Sung by Paul Dufault’ ‘A Sprig of Boronia’ ‘Music by Florence Hull’ ‘Copyright, Price 2/- nett, Published by F. M. Leisure object - Baulk circle templates, Alcocks & Co, 1860-1960
These items are known as baulk circle templates. The larger one stamped Alcock & Co would have been made before 1888 (this is clear from the address). The middle one is more likely to have been made during the late 19th or early 20 century. The smaller on made of ply would have been made much later in the 20th century. The person maintaining the Billiard Table uses one of these templates to mark out a semi-circle on the table cloth in a particular position determined by the rules of the games of billiard and snooker. The semi-circle is known as the Baulk Circle. Together with a line across the table at the diameter of the semi-circle , known as the baulk line, the baulk circle plays a crucial part in these games. For example, the opening shot of each game is played from the baulk circle; in the game of billiard, if an opponent's ball crosses the baulk line, it may lead to his ball being “protected “during the next shot.A billiard room was a feature of all the Missions over the world.Set of 3 large semi circular wooden tools.pool, snooker, billiard, games, mission to seamen, mission to seafarers, alcocks, baulk line, baulk circle -
