Plaque - Memorial Plaque, Fanny and Emily Dixon, 1943
Miss Emily Dixon acted as Ladies Habour Lights Guild Work-Secretary and later, as Secretary of the Malvern Branch and continued to work for the group until her death. Miss Fanny Dixon worked as the Mission's organist and Committee member as well as friend. The plaque was unveiled by Mrs. Holmes on December 5th, 1943 and was dedicated by the Chaplain. Rectangular white stone plaque surrounded by two frames. This badge was issued in 1920 to commemorate the visit to Australia of Edward, Prince of Wales. It was issued to school children. The visit of the Prince of Wales was a gesture by the British Crown to recognize the sacrifices and efforts of the Australian people and defence forces during World War One. Edward, Prince of Wales, later became King of England in 1936 and abdicated that same year. Letter - Statement regarding location of the old ferry call bell
When a ferry was the only way to cross the river, a bell was rung to call the ferryman. this letter explains that the bell was sold to raise funds for construction of the bridge. Mr W. B Cumming bought the bell and passed it to Mrs T. McKenzie. this statement was written and signed by Mrs W.B.Cumming and further states the expectation that a tower and belfry would be constructed, along with a plaque memorialising church members and Mr W.B Cumming.Significant because it specifies what happened to the Ferry call bell, which was very important when the ferry was the only way to cross the river. The merchant marine has many followers in the area both past and present. Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale offer a great vantage point for ship spotting as they navigate the rip. The Museum has a large collection of paintings of ocean liners of the past which is of great interest to immigrants to this country especially those who travelled by sea in the past. Of significant interest to visitors who visit our display of ocean liners paintings. Migrants from the 50s to the 70s take great pleasure in finding their ship in the display. Unfortunately, nothing is know of the previous owner of the uniform.Chief engineer uniform on mannequin. Rank shown is that of Captain as the Chief Engineer was of equal rank to the Captain. However, the Captain retained overall authority on board ship. Collection of thirty-nine postcards donated by Jillian Rigby which had been owned by her grandparents, George and Edith Weir, who from c.1917 lived at 84 Princess Street, Kew. The mostly 'mint' postcards were purchased in Victoria and while travelling overseas. The sole dated postcard is dated from 1929. The postcards are numbered sequentially from 2017.0058.01-39. The remainder of the collection donated by Jill Rigby which was once owned by the Weirs of Broken Hill and Kew consist of costumes, costume accessories, photographs, and documents.The postcards in the Weir collection, especially those purchased on a trip or trips to the mother country, i.e. United Kingdom, represent a representative sample of sites that were considered significant to those Australians undertaking a reverse grand tour by member of the erstwhile colonies. Depicts a circlet with "ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND" inscribed. Cypher with interlaced and reversed "L". On the left of the cypher is a boars head and on right is a wild cat. Above the cypher is a coronet. All within a wreath of thistles. 2. Silver coloured metal cap badge. Design features a Maltese Cross over a laurel wreath and Order of the Garter Star. Battle honours of the regiment inscribed on the four arms of the cross. Centre of the cross has "ARROYO DOS MOLINOS 1811" inscribed. THE BORDER REGIMENT inscribed on a scroll below cross. 3. Enclosed is a type-written letter on a single sheet of matching buff-coloured, lined paper (0373.c) also from Durban dated 27/03/48.0373a commences "Hullo Allan, ....." and concerns a debt owed to Allan by the writer. He also mentions the forthcoming Royal visit to Australia. It concludes with "....Happy Sailings, Wynn." 0373b is torn where the stamps would have been and what remains of the type-written address is "Utility Man ALLA., s.s. "Morgenster", c/o South African Marine Corporation Ltd. Pier 51, North River, NEW YORK CITY, U.S.A." There is a blue 'Par Avion' stuck diagonally across the lower left corner. 0373c is a type-written copy of a letter to Mr E. W. Harold James Thomas Johnson TX3956 enlisted on 25.7.1940, aged 37. Served with the 7th Division Ammunition Supply Coy A.A.S.C as a driver. He was discharged om 30.11.1945 with the rank of L/Cpl. .1) Letter is to 'Dear Mrs Johnson". The contents of the note relate to the writer picking up the note which was thrown over the side of the Queen Mary and they picked it up form the water and later posted it on. .2) Note torn in half from "TX3956 B Section 7 DIV AMN COY 2nd AIF ABROAD" To "Mrs H. JOHNSON HOLLAND HOUSE WILMOT ST BURNIE TASMANIA, Husband on Queen Mary Everything okay, Love Harold". This is believed to be the note thrown overboard in .1). .3) The letter from H, Johnson is to "Brooks McGlashan & ?? PTY LTD", thanking them for parcels received VIA the Aust. Comforts Fund. Point .1) on the rear has three handwritten names in pencil: "TX3930, Thomas Charles Munn, 7th AFG Brighton" "TX3422, Pte. K.V. Smith 6th Rfts I.T.D Brighton" "30337 AC1 Sayer Group 37 - Ascot Vale" All three enlisted in 1940. Munn was discharged 23.6.1946 in 8 Div AASC Smith was discharged 12.11.1945 in 2/8 Fld Regt. Sayer was discharged 9.11.1945 in 7 AIRCRAFT Depot (RAAF) Refer to Cat.
