The cloth insignia badges date to 1925-1940, after the First World War and into the early Second World War era. During peacetime training, the "brown with a cherry-red crossbar" badge was initially used for the 8th Field Ambulance, 2nd Military District Medical and Veterinary Stores. The colour patch was approved for wear by full-time duty personnel of all medical units apart from the Infantry and Cavalry. In 1942 these patches were replaced by the new scheme of colour patches introduced by the Australian Army Medical Corps. Dr W R Angus was a Surgeon Captain for the Australian Defence Forces, Army Medical Corps, stationed in Ballarat, Victoria, and in Bonegilla, N.S.W. He completed his service just before the end of the war due to suffering from a heart attack. The badges are now part of Flagstaff Hill’s comprehensive W.R. Angus Collection, donated by the family of Dr W R Angus (1901-1970), surgeon and oculist. The W.R. Angus Collection: - The W.R. Angus Collection includes historical medical equipment, surgical instruments and material belonging to Dr Edward Ryan and Dr Thomas Francis Ryan, (both of Nhill, Victoria) and Dr Angus’ own belongings. The Collection’s history spans the medical practices of the two Doctors Ryan, from 1885-1926 plus that of Dr Angus, up until 1969. It includes historical medical and surgical equipment and instruments from the doctors Edward and Thomas Ryan of Nhill, Victoria. Dr Angus married Gladys in 1927 at Ballarat, the nearest big city to Nhill where he began as a Medical Assistant. He was also Acting House surgeon at the Nhill hospital where their two daughters were born. During World War II He served as a Military Doctor in the Australian Defence Forces. Dr Angus and his family moved to Warrnambool in 1939, where Dr Angus operated his own medical practice. He later added the part-time Port Medical Officer responsibility and was the last person appointed to that position. Both Dr Angus and his wife were very involved in the local community, including the planning stages of the new Flagstaff Hill and the layout of the gardens there. Dr Angus passed away in March 1970.These colour insignia patches represent the history between the First and Second World Wars and the evolution of Australian Army Medical Corps patches. Dr W R Angus (1901-1970), surgeon and oculist, collected a range of military objects including those he personally used during his time as Surgeon Captain in the Australian Defence Forces in World War II. The item allows insight into military life in the early-to-mid 20th century. The W.R. Angus Collection is significant for still being located at the site it is connected with, Doctor Angus being the last Port Medical Officer in Warrnambool. The badge belonged to the Donor's father - Bill Irvin, who was a SEC tram driver. Bill and his elder brother Dan, both drove trams in Ballarat. The Lavington Sports Ground, former home of the Lavington Sports Club, is now owned and operated by Albury City Council. Over 50 years ago, a group of Lavington locals dreamed of building a new sportsground to encourage more people to play sport, particularly juniors. The original oval opened in 1973. The Sports Ground was developed solely by the Lavington Sports Club, formed by 30 football and cricket players and supporters in 1964. Football and cricket clubs had existed in Lavington since before 1914. In 1964, the football and cricket clubs merged to become the Lavington Sports Club. The new club and facilities were established on land initially leased from the Divine Sword Missionaries on their former seminary and turkey farm. The club expanded its facilities and representative sports throughout the next 20 years, including hosting international events. However the Club's debt worsened and In 2001 the entire Lavington Sports Club operation went into liquidation. It was taken over by Penrith Panthers through the Panthers Entertainment Group. A badge that once belonged to J B McLean, he could have brought it back from World War as a souvenir. From information found online: 'The Royal Dublin Fusiliers was an infantry regiment of the British Army, which recruited in the east of Ireland. Created in 1881 by the amalgamation of two former East India Company regiments, it was disbanded in 1922 on the establishment of the Irish Free State.' These were with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920. Ballarat Grammar’s 23 acre site facing Forest and Howitt Streets, Wendouree was chosen carefully by the Committee set up by the Church Assembly (Synod) in November 1908. Classes began for the 38 boys enrolled on 14 February 1911. The first building accommodated 90 day boys and 25 boarders. It comprised the Headmaster’s residence, three classrooms, one large dormitory, a small bathroom, two cubicles for assistant masters and the matron’s room. During the first year the property was fenced, trees and cypress hedges were planted, a carriage drive was constructed and work commenced for the School Cricket Oval. Frederick August Schleibs a 44 year old farmer of Wodonga enlisted in AIF 30 March 1916 and was allocated to 2nd Pioneer Battalion with regimental number 2972. En route to England he was hospitalised at Cape Town with injured knee. He was returned to Australia and discharged 27 October 1916. He reenlisted 21 February 1917 and sailed with 28th Reinforcements 8th Light Horse to Egypt. He returned to Australia following the war.
