Badge - Membership Albury Commercial Club, Perfection Badges, 1980
The Commercial Club, located on Dean Street is in the heart of Albury’s business and shopping district. It began on 7th May 1902, when 11 men met in the rooms of the Border City Club to form a new club. Auctioneer John Chenery chaired the meeting and in June was elected foundation president. Membership fees were set at one guinea ($2.10). The name Commercial Club was adopted, and the Club was founded as a professional and business gentlemen’s only club. A pub called the Salutation Inn and the blacksmith’s forge of Johnny McEachern once stood on the Club’s Dean Street frontage. The Club secured the site in 1935 and built the Wool Exchange on the frontage and the club behind.Peak business came during regular wool sales in the Wool Exchange, which remained part of the Club premises until 1978. The Club survived crises, including in 1916 when the whole committee was replaced. Commercial Club membership was not opened to anyone under 21 until 1997, though the voting age in Australia had been lowered to 18 in 1973. A special disco tavern for 18–21-year-olds operated briefly in 1986. By 1972 there were 800 male members. It now has almost 30,000 members both male and female and employs almost 300 staff. This badge is representative of the role played by licensed clubs in the local community.A blue and silver enamelled membership badge issued by the Commercial Club Albury, NSW for the year 1980-81Around the centre of the badge: "COMMERCIAL CLUB ALBURY" On small disc added to badge:"80/81"commercial club albury, licensed clubs albury -
Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village
Badge - Australian Military badge, Australian Commonwealth Military Forces, 1914-to possibly 1940s
The two badges belonged to Dr William Roy Angus and are now part of Flagstaff Hill’s comprehensive W.R. Angus Collection, donated by the family of Dr W R Angus, 1901-1970, surgeon and oculist. The badges date to the World War I era, when Dr Angus was a youth. These badges were also used in World War II it seems, and could have belonged to Dr Angus when he was a Surgeon Captain for the Australian Defence Forces during World War II when he was in his forties. Some resources say that this badge was also used in WWII The W.R. Angus Collection: - The W.R. Angus Collection includes historical medical equipment, surgical instruments and material belonging to Dr Edward Ryan and Dr Thomas Francis Ryan, (both of Nhill, Victoria) and Dr Angus’ own belongings. The Collection’s history spans the medical practices of the two Doctors Ryan, from 1885-1926 plus that of Dr Angus, up until 1969. It includes historical medical and surgical equipment and instruments from the doctors Edward and Thomas Ryan of Nhill, Victoria. Dr Angus married Gladys in 1927 at Ballarat, the nearest big city to Nhill where he began as a Medical Assistant. He was also Acting House surgeon at the Nhill hospital where their two daughters were born. During World War II He served as a Military Doctor in the Australian Defence Forces. Dr Angus and his family moved to Warrnambool in 1939, where Dr Angus operated his own medical practice. He later added the part-time Port Medical Officer responsibility and was the last person appointed to that position. Dr Angus and his wife were very involved in the local community, including the planning stages of the new Flagstaff Hill and the layout of the gardens there. Dr Angus passed away in March 1970.Dr W R Angus (1901-1970), surgeon and oculist, collected a range of military objects including those he personally used during his time as Surgeon Captain in the Australian Defence Forces in World War II. The objects allow insight into military life in the early-to-mid 20th century. The W.R. Angus Collection is significant for still being located at the site it is connected with, Doctor Angus being the last Port Medical Officer in Warrnambool. The Collection includes historical medical objects that date back to the late 1800s.Badges; a pair of collar badges from the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces badges. Badge - Fundraising Button, Australian Natives Association, Wattle Day For Children’s Charities, 1914-1920
Frances Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, at one stage managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street from c. 1920 until the 1940s. After Francis Rigg’s death, the collection of buttons and medallions was inherited by his son, Ken Rigg (1922-2014). The collection was subsequently donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2015 by Francis' grandson, Adrian Rigg, at the time of the Gallipoli & Beyond Commemoration in 2015. The collection covers a period of almost 40 years. The majority of the buttons are patriotic buttons, issued and sold during and immediately after the First World World War (1914-1918) to raise funds for national and overseas causes. The collection also includes a number of locally significant sporting event buttons and sporting club medallions, issued in the 1920s and 1930s.Patriotic and other pressed tin buttons and badges were produced in large numbers in the first decades of the twentieth century. By nature, insubstantial and ephemeral, they have not always survived. The collections of badges, buttons and medallions in the Kew Historical Society collection is homogenous and yet diverse, ranging from buttons sold to raise funds for the war efforts in 1914-18 and 1939-45, to those used at festivals and sporting events. Because of the manufacturing process, many surviving buttons and badges have been affected by inadequate storage, suffering from oxidisation and physical damage. These survivors are now historically and socially significant artefacts, revealing much about the attitudes and values of the period in which they were produced. Their widespread distribution means that they are frequently significant at a local, state, national and international level.A ‘Wattle Day’ badge featuring the head of a young girl surrounded by sprays of wattle. In the design for this fundraising button the purpose of the fundraising – ‘for Children’s Charities’ is emphasised."Wattle Day: For Children’s Charities"wattle day, patriotic buttons, first world war (1914-18), badges -

Badge - WW2 fundraising badge, Tin hat badge, 1940s
Tin Hat Day was established in 1922 after the end of WWI. It raised funds to benefit returned soldiers who had fallen on hard times after the war and during the Great Depression. It continued on during WW2 and into the 1950s. This badge is c1940. The tin hat badge was modelled on the British steel combat helmet known as the Brodie helmet, designed and patented in London in 1915 by John Leopold Brodie. Colloquially, it had many names including the shrapnel helmet, battle bowler, Tommy helmet, tin hat, dishpan hat, tin pan hat, washbasin, and in the United States the doughboy helmet. The German Army called it the Salatschüssel (salad bowl).Tin Hat Day was a significant annual event over several decades. Badges such as are not rare; they were sold in large numbers but as ephemeral items relatively few of those sold were retained.A round metal badge with a domed centre, mimicking a stylised tin hat. Badge - Fundraising Button, East Kew Citizens Sports Carnival, Admit 2nd December 1922, 1922
Most of the ephemera assembled by Francis Rigg were patriotic buttons but also included come sporting event buttons including two associated with the East Kew Citizens Sports Carnival. The subdivision of the area now known as Kew East commenced before World War 1, but it was not until the 1920s that it became fully developed. At this time, there was a strong Progress Association and this body raised funds to purchase land and build the East Kew Citizen’s Hall in Normandy Road, the first stage of which was completed in 1922. This hall was designed to be extended, although this never occurred, and the building now forms part of the facilities of the East Kew Uniting Church. The ‘East Kew Citizens Sports Carnival’ may well have been a fundraiser event for the building fund. As far as is known, the carnival was only held for a couple of years.Frances Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, at one stage managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street from c. 1920 until the 1940s.
