Mervyn was posted with the 2/23rd Battalion and was sent to Tobruk. Medal - Sandhurst Industrial Exhibition Medal, Ernest A. Altmann, 1879
The Sandhurst Industrial Exhibition was held in Sandhurst at the Market Building and Corn Exchange and was opened by the Marquis of Normandy on the 17th March 1879. Modelled on a similar event held in Ballarat the previous year which was largely aimed at displaying the work of juvenile artisans, the Sandhurst Exhibition was more general in its purpose and provided more space for the general exhibition of products, natural and manufactured from the broader surrounding district. The opening event included a procession of all the friendly societies, fire brigades and other local institutions. In 1961 when the Charter was issued Barbara Brown was the Victorian Chief Ray, Dorothy Wood the State Supt. and John W Goodluck the Chief Director. The Methodist Girls' Comradeship was formed in 1918 with the first Branch being in Bondi, NSW. There were three sections: Junior Rays, 8 - 11 years; Senior Rays, 11 - 15 years and Comrades, 15 years and over. The aims of the MGC was to "challenge young people with the saving power of Jesus Christ and provide avenues of christian service" and "to provide for the spiritual, social, physical and educational welfare of the members". The Independent Order of Rechabites began in Salford, England in 1835. The Rechabites were a group named after Rechab, a leader from the old testament in the Bible. He instructed his followers not to drink. The Rechabites were a nomadic group of separatists who did not drink and abstained from other practices associated with the Canaanites.
