This hotel was located in Chute Street Diamond Creek. The site was from the C.F.A. station east to the corner. In 1925 this hotel was burnt down at 11.00 am on a week day and the street was closed by police because the lighting system used petrol gas and an explosion was feared. Fortunately there was no explosion. This photo shows the gutted structure after the fire. Glenelg Shire Council records. Built on land gazetted for defence purposes in the 1840s, Portland Battery was constructed in 1889 to defend Victoria against the feared Russian invasion. Batteries were also constructed at Warrnambool and Port Fairy during this period. The Battery comprises a magazine, upper chamber, a parapet wall, and three gun emplacements. In 1984 the Battery underwent a major restoration. Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of he Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans die on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This item is significant because it documents actions taken by the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee in their role overseeing the Tourist Area.A letter from the Management Committee sent to all Licensees outlining concerns for the capacity of the sewerage system at Falls Creek. It is feared that the duplication of the system may be necessary, the cost of which would have to be borne by the Licensees. It was suspected that the issue was largely the result of residents leaving a tap running to ensure that their internal water installations did not freeze. If this was feeding into the sewerage system it put additional pressure on it's capacity.
