This Bible belonged to the Bell family. Joseph Bell was born on May 9th 1829. He married Elizabeth, who was born on October 22nd, 1833. Their marriage was conducted on September 12th, 1854, at St Pauls, Bristol, England. On the front pages of the bible there used to be a list of their ten children and their birthdates but there are only remnants of a heavy weight paper; the opposite Fly page with publication details is also missing, along with the Family Records section, which no longer has pages for Births and Marriages, only precise edges of two pages . The Bible is the King James Version, named after James Charles Stuart (1556-1625) who was King James VI of Scotland from 24 July 1567, and who was crowned King James I of England, France and Ireland from 24 March 1603 until his death in 1625. The Hampton Court Conference of 1604 commissioned a new and more accurate version of the Holy Bible that was translated from the original Sacred Scriptures and that included only the approved books. This task was undertaken be a group of learned scholars who worked in teams and compared notes, working to ensure a true and accurate version. It was completed in 1611 and became widely known as the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible and is still widely used and greatly respected for its poetic language. The first printed page of this Bible is the Translators Speech at the completed work which was handed over to King James I in 1611.This Bible was published after 1611, and likely to have been purchased at the time of the marriage of the previous owners, Joseph and Elizabeth Bell, in 1854, so it is possibly a century and a half old. The decorative cover and metal clasp are a sign that the Bible was a book to be treasured,. Indeed, our Collection included several Bibles brought to Australia by immigrants, even though luggage was tightly restricted. This Bible was once used as a family record, similar to Bibles printed in modern times, with lined blank pages in the centre for the owners to record their own, their ancestors' and their descendants' life events. Sadly, these pages are no longer within the Bible.Book, black textured leather front and back covers, gold leaf page edges, metal clasp on centre edge of front and back covers holds them together. The title is inscribed in gold embossing on the front cover. The Bible has coloured illustrations, cross references and maps. The bible belonged to Hilda Elizabeth Foster, Presbyterian Deaconess. Hilda Elizabeth Foster (1890-1982) was commissioned as a Deaconess in 1914 giving a lifetime of service to the church particularly in the social care aspect of the Gospel. She was also a double certified nurse. Deaconess Hilda Foster began her work as a Deaconess in South Melbourne and then served for 13 years with the Presbyterian Sisterhood in North Fitzroy caring for unmarried mothers and their babies. In 1933 she was appointed Matron of the Presbyterian Girls' Home in Elsternwick where she worked for 15 years. She retired in 1948 when it was noted "In complete dedication matron has given herself to this care of souls". Deaconess Foster was awarded the British Empire Medal for her work in the Queen's birthday honours in 1981. Deaconess Foster was one of the first qualified Mother Christmasses in Australia. This Bible originally belonged to members of the Orr family who came from Scotland and had a property at Addington near Learmonth in central Victoria (from the 1860s). Many families in the 19th and early 20th centuries had family bibles which were read individually by family members or read aloud to family members, especially on a Sunday. Many of these large-size bibles were used to record family information (births, deaths, marriages), though this one does not have any information recorded. This Bible is retained as a splendid example of a 19th century family Bible. It will be very useful for display. This is a hard-cover book with gilt edging on the pages. It has a leather cover with heavy gold embossing on the front and back covers. Inserted in the embossing are gold religious symbols and images. The Bible contains 45 chapters with the Old and New Testaments and other biblical and religion- related articles. There are many black and white illustrations and some colour illustrations. This Christian Bible by Professor James Moffatt from the United Free Church College in Glasglow Scotland was at a time when translated Christian bibles(Greek to English) were being review as to the accuracy of their translated words. This period was in the early 1900's specifically during and between the two major World Wars of 1914-18 and 1939-45 and also covering the Great Depression(1939). All these periods were ones of death, destruction and "loss of faith". Bibles which provided greater clarity of better times ahead flourished. This book offered its readers hope for the future (in terrible times). The regions that it covered were those who belonged to the Christian Faith. The significance of this bible to the Kiewa Valley is that it provides an insight of those Christians living in a semi remote rural region at the period in Australian history where forces outside of this area were placing hardships which were "foreign" to them, as a family and as a community. The major Christian religions within the Kiewa Valley were either of the Catholic or English Protestant teachings. These groups still remain the dominant ones well into the 2nd Millennium. Spiritual relief to overcome harsh rural setbacks is not just specific to the Australian rural sector but is also global. With the influx of migrant workers from the war torn European nations (after WWII) a broader coverage of Christian and other faiths developed. A "positive" saying, when crops failed and bush fires and river floods sprang up, rallied the faithful "with God's help" This hard covered bible consists of six pages of preamble including title, publishing details, printer and author's preface. The book has 388 pages of black print. Relevant reference lines are notated by numbers on the left side of the page.
