Kew Historical Society IncCollection, Helen Bushell Kite Collection, c. 1975 - 2017
Kites created by Helen Bushell, Kew resident for many years, and a pioneer of kite-flying world-wide. Kites are hand-made, mainly by Helen, and many were flown in local parks of Kew. Documents provide some background to the collection, and a set of photographs, which was used in an exhibition at Hawthorn Arts Centre, help to identify the kites and where they were flown. Among the documents are poems, books on kite-flying written by Helen Bushell, badges and cards from international conferences, and Australian, British and American patents for kite design. An apron made to celebrate 75 years of the War Widows Guild in 2020. The Kookaburra is the symbol of the Guild due to its laugh. From the War Widows' Guild of Australia website: 'the Guild badge would feature the kookaburra, an industrious and cheerful bird who mated for life, was fearless and aggressive in the defence of its young and the area of territory it regarded as its own. The bird also had a unique call, not a song but a laugh; a chortle of rollicking mirth (to bring the widows back to laughter). Also, the kookaburra is a typically and completely Australian symbol, one that could be worn proudly by every widow whatever her creed or ideals. The kookaburra was also the mascot of the 7th Division of the 2nd AIF, commanded by Mrs Vasey’s husband, Major-General Vasey. Mrs J M Vasey was the founder and president of the War Widows Guild. During the second world war she became secretary of the AIF Women's Association, a body which sought to help soldiers' wives. Her work with this body drew her attention to the plight of war widows. After her husband Major-General George Alan Vasey died in an aircraft accident on 5 March 1945 she became a widow herself. At the end of the war Mrs Vasey founded the War Widows Guild, established on 22 November 1945. The Victorian War Widows Guild closed in 2021. Some items, including this apron, were donated to the Legacy archive for preservation. It was possible for a widow to be members of both Legacy and the War Widows Guild. The songs in this piece are: Hustle an Bustle of New York, The Star Spangled Banner, Yankee Doodle, Buffalo Girls, My Maryland, My Maryland, The Vacant Chair, Camptown Races, In Dixie's Land, My Old Kentucky Home, We Are Coming Father Abra'am, The Battle Cry of Freedom, The Mocking Bird and Old Glory's Marching on. ... very successful record of Australian Bird songs by Carl ...A book and recording of Australian Bush Sounds from the Victorian border to Cape York. It is a follow-up to the previously very successful record of Australian Bird songs by Carl and Lise Weismann in 1957 - 58. All were recorded in their natural surroundings but for the Dingoes which they had to insert the howls of a group in a faunal reserve. The lyrebird was drawn from and excellent sequence by Harold Pollock. The book describes the Sound and Communication in Animals and Insect Sounds.A slim square hardcover book with text by Allen Keast and a record of Australian Bush Sounds. The cover has a photograph of a Black Swan nesting in open wetlands. Inside the left front cover is a pocket with an EP record by Carl and Lise Weismann.
