Peter’s Project is an organization set up to raise funds for a Regional Cancer Care Centre in Warrnambool and to manage the Centre after it is built. The project was initially set up by Vicki Jellie in memory of her husband, Peter, who died of cancer some years earlier. The main aim was to build a centre for the treatment of cancer in Warrnambool so that many cancer sufferers did not have to go to Geelong or Melbourne for treatment. Government and local Council funds have been obtained for the project with the general public contributing to an appeal to raise $5 million. This target has been reached. The building is currently being erected. This invitation to the Official Launch of the appeal was sent to Bill Phillpot who was the Director of the appeal. This invitation is of some interest as it indicates the launch of the public appeal for funds for Peter’s Project and it is a great example of one person commencing a community campaign which was very successful and will have far-reaching results. This is a single-sheet card sent to Bill Phillpot by the Directors and Committee of Peter’s Project Ltd and the Premier of Victoria, Dr Denis Napthine. Eltham Day Care Centre The Centre made two banners; the first was made during a one-day workshop with Tracey Naughton utilising individual fabric painted triangles and joining them together. This workshop was so well received that the Centre wanted to make another banner over a longer period. Tracey suggested that local felt artist, Alice Ruxton, Tracey's grandmother, work with the group. The group wanted to do something with an historical theme and Tracey brought some photos from the Historical Society's files. A design was created from these. Felt, a physically demanding medium, attracted a number of men to participate in this banner, as well as women. Weekly workshops were held over a couple of months, with everyone at the Centre very interested. The completed banner was returned to Tracey to attach a backing. The Ballarat School of Mines was established in 1870 through the initiatives of the Ballarat Mining Board making it the oldest site of technical education in Australia. The Board was concerned with the shortage of mine managers for the goldfields. Classes began in surveying, mathematics, and chemistry and a decade later they included metallurgy , assaying and geology. With the decline in goldmining the direction of the college changed and broadened, the art School was established and the Ballarat Junior Technical School developed. In 1976, the tertiary sector seperated from the School of Mines and Industries Ballarat to form the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In the 1980s SMB was a Community College of Technical Education and Further Education (TAFE) offering a wide range of vocational, enrichment and preparatory programs. It is continuing the tradition of providing for the educaiton needs of people within the Central Highlands. During the 1970s and 80s it acquired and refurbished old buildings and developed new facilities to keep up with the needs of an expanding curriculum and student population.
