This is a badge belonged to a member of the Freemasons Friendly Society. In Warrnambool the Lodge of St. John was founded in 1861. and the Masonic Temple in Kepler Street ( the building still extant) was opened in 1870.This badge is of some interest as it may have local provenance. .1 Brass badge attached by a hook to three brass pieces of varying shapes through which is threaded a cream ribbon. The badge has as its centre the star of David with fine text. Attached to the points of the star is a narrow circle with text. Outside the circle are nine protruding points ending in three clover shapes. At the base is an inverted horseshoe shaped appendage with a T and H interlocked. Letter written on paper with Ancient Order of Forresters Friendly Society printed across the top and on the left the Forresters circular emblem with a deer's head at the top. Around the edge is printed- Unitas Benevolentia et Concordia.('Unity, Benevolence & Concord', sometimes given in Latin as 'Unitas, Benevolentia, Concordia'.) The circle is divided into four with shaking hands in the top left, three deer in the top right, an angle and horn is the bottom left and a quiver and arrows on the right. The letter is headed Court Unity No. 3200 Ballarat 17 May 1873. It is addressed to Mr Thomas Thomas, c/o Mrs J. Jilbert, Long Gully, Sandhurst. Sash has embroidered all seeing eye, a deer's head, a shield divided into four, the top left corner has shaking hands, the top right has three deer, one above the other, the bottom left has a sheep?, and a horn separated by a red band, and the bottom right has a quiver, an arrow and a horn. In the centre are three arrows in front of a horn. On each side is a man dressed in yellow boots, white trousers,slightly different green jackets, and green hats with white feathers. One man has a bow and arrow and the other has a club and a dog is behind him. Underneath are four women circling the top part of a sphere above the words 'Unity Benevolence and Concord. Underneath is Ancient Order of Foresters, then there is some yellow and brown filigree above Court King fo the Forest. 3770. Henry Browne and Son Ltd, of Barking, made aviation and nautical compasses, clocks and dials. The company made compasses for aircraft notably, Spitfires, Tiger moths and Concord. Henry Browne was born in Lewis, Sussex in 1842 and died in Barking in 1935. His company was a well respected English instrument maker that had been making and selling fine quality compasses, ship's clocks, inclinometers, sextants, and chandlery items for over 140 years. It started in a factory in Brightlingsea, Essex and moved to Barking in 1929. The Trade Mark brand Sestrel was used on all their equipment. Their “Dead Beat“ compass design is well dampened serving to reduce oscillations. It is reported that this design compass was fitted to many Allied ships during WW II. The company went through a boom period in the 1970s but collapsed in the 1980s due to the popularity of cheaper plastic compasses over tradition brass ones. Over more recent years, there has been a consolidation of British instrument makers and the firm of Henry Browne & Son has changed hands a number of times. At last count, it became part of Lillie & Gillie of London in 1985 when John Lilley & Gillie Ltd acquires the assets of Henry Browne & Sons (Sestrel) Ltd, a major competitor for what may be the second time. The model name of Sestral came about via the following.Take first two letters of the word Sensitive then the firs two letter of steady and the firs three letters of reliable hence the trade name of "Sestral". The Warship NELSON underwent alterations in 1860, including cut down to two decks and lengthened, her armaments reduced to 72 guns. Two 7inch 68 pounder guns were added to her armament. In February 7 1867 she was officially given to the Colony of Victoria by the Imperial Government. At the time her Commander was Captain Charles B. Payne. The Warship reached Melbourne in 4th February 1868. Relics of the NELSON were auctioned at Williamstown Victoria Naval Depot, and her two anchors are preserved for public display at Williamstown. An active demand for a share of the guns from various towns in the State. Ballarat received four (4) guns, Bendigo and Castlemaine two (2) each, while one has been given to each of the following towns: - Ararat, Tarnagulla, Hamilton, Bacchus Marsh, Echuca and Geelong.
