This photograph depicts the interior of the dining room of the Manse with the 6 chairs and table decorated with flowers. Behind the table is the arched cast iron fireplace (lost) with mantelpiece with a clock and candelabras. On the left side we can see the corner of the oak console and on the right another cupboard and a framed painting. The photograph also shows the wooden floor covered with rugs. Unfortunately it has been carpeted in the late 20th century.This photograph is a rare view of the Manse and the private life of a chaplain. The mantel, like that in the. third bedroom features garlands of polychrome painted flowers on the three panels. The mantel is inset with monochrome surround and hearth tiles. The polychrome tiles are decorated in a manner reminiscent of Ottoman Iznik tile work. They feature the flowers and foliage of fuchsias and lily of the valley. The tiles at the edge have been cut to fit into the surround. The tiles have black visually interlocking borders. There are twelve tiles used at the front which extends six tiles deep. 'The distinctive lyrebird firescreen has become a popular feature of the lounge. It is not known how long it has stood in this position, but it appears to have been custom-made for the fireplace. Firescreens are not clearly shown in early photographs. It is popularly believed that the fenders on the floor..came from the Victorian Railways workshops and were made from railway line metal..' (Pg 72 Historica. 2011) "In 1924 amateur naturalist and mountain-guide, Alice Manfield (18-78 -1960) popularly known as Guide Alice, released 'The Lyre-birds of Mount Buffalo', a 23 page booklet detailing her studies into the lyre-birds on Mount Buffalo, the first pictorial record of lyre-birds to be published.... It is not known whether the lyrebird fire screen in the Chalet Lounge was dedicated to Alice Manfield and her study into local lyrebirds, but this popular feature is a most appropriate tribute." This photograph shows the pre-heater on the left and the furnace on the right. After clean up of stamper table, amalgam is placed in a retort, then placed in the furnace where mercury is condensed and runs down the small pipe into an enamel bucket and can be reused. This is one of a series of photographs of the Rutherglen Gold Battery. The battery's purpose was to crush quartz from nearby quartz reefs and extract gold from within. The battery was erected in 1908 and consists of a five-head battery, Wilfrey table, Bergin pan, portable steam engine and shed. The battery was restored in 2011/12 and can be viewed daily between 9.00am and 5.00pm. The original 1880s white marble mantel, obliquely positioned in the northwest corner of the room (one of two examples in the house) is the most ornate mantel in the first floor bedrooms. The central visual element in the mantel is an upturned conch shell surrounded by stylised foliage and flowers. The two upright carved supports of the mantel are sinuously carved in all almost rococo manner. The mantel is inset with monochrome surround tiles and ornate polychrome glazed tiles in a manner reminiscent of Ottoman Iznik tile work.
