A photograph of Jessie Vasey reproduced on display board. Mrs J M Vasey was the founder and president of the War Widows Guild. During the second world war she became secretary of the AIF Women's Association, a body which sought to help soldiers' wives. Her work with this body drew her attention to the plight of war widows. After her husband Major-General George Alan Vasey died in an aircraft accident on 5 March 1945 she became a widow herself. At the end of the war Mrs Vasey founded the War Widows Guild. This reproduction on display board may have been for an exhibition of Guild memorabilia at some time. The Victorian War Widows Guild closed in 2021. Some items, including this board, were donated to the Legacy archive for preservation. It was possible for a widow to be members of both Legacy and the War Widows Guild. Guy STUART (1942 - 06 June 2024 ) Born Canberra, Australia Guy Stuart was a student of John Brack at Melbourne Grammar School (1955-60), and attended RMIT where he studied Painting from 1961-1962. Stuart held his debut exhibition in 1968, at the height of new abstraction, and sold out the entire show of figurative works. 'November Apple' was part of a travelling exhibition called 'Imaging the Apple' which travelled from 2004 to 2005. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. This photograph of the plaque on the side of the P.S Adelaide while she was a stationary exhibit in the Hopwood Gardens from 1963 until 1984 tells the story of her manufacture and her work life up until 1963. The P.S Adelaide was launched on 21st July 1866. It was owned by J.G.Grassie from Poon Boon Station and the Officer Family of Murray Downs Station Swan Hill. The Adelaide was named after the niece of the Officer Bros, Adelaide Blackwood. The shipwrights who built her was George Linklater. The Adelaide brought wool and passengers from the wool stations on the Murray and Darling Rivers down to the Echuca Wharf. In 1872 she was sold to David Blair & Sons. She was used to bring timber from the Barmah Forest to the Echuca Wharf. She did this work for the next 80 years. In 1953 she was tied up near the Mill and left In 1958 she went to Paringa South Australia to work in the sawmill industry again. In 1960 the Echuca Apex Club and The Echuca Historical Society raised enough funds to buy the P.S. Adelaide and return her to Echuca. In November 1963 she was lifted out of the water and placed in Hopwood Gardens as this was thought to be a way of preserving her. In 1984 it was decided to return her to the water to resume work as a passenger vessel. In that time the Port of Echuca and the Echuca Wharf had been restored as a Tourist Precinct. The P.S Adelaide is extremely significant as it it the oldest known wooden hulled paddle steamers in the world. She was built in Echuca in 1866 and still operates on the Murray River today. She has worked in the Wool Industry, the Timber Industry and the Tourist Industry.Coloured photograph showing the information sign which was attached to the side of the P.S Adelaide whilst she was a stationary exhibit in the Hopwood Gardens from 1963 until 1984.On the sign is written; " P.S Adelaide/built on the Murray at Echuca for Officer Grassie &Co. She was purchased by that company from David Blair Saw Miller of Echuca in 1861. 75ft. 4 inches X 12 ft.5 inches X 3 ft. 6 inches built of 3 inch red gum planking on an angle. Iron frames 2? The Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition, held at Bendigo from 13 November 1901 to 14 May 1902. The courts were numbered from one, or had titles like “Machinery”, “Agricultural”, “Naval & Military Court” and “Art”. The female visitors to the Exhibition were able to view exhibits deemed suitable for the fairer sex and located within their own “Women’s Court”. There were exhibits such as “Parasols & Umbrellas”, cotton and haberdashery from Manchester and Staffordshire, “Corsets & Embroideries” from Paris. The most valuable exhibits were mining machinery such as Taylor Horsfield’s £850 “Air Compressor & Rock Borer”. “Bohemian Glassware” brought down from Sydney was valued at £600. The profits from this Exhibition were used to fund the sculpture known as the Gold Monument, which still gazes along Pall Mall (from the McCrae Street end). The Exhibition’s Cash Book shows payments, which totalled £1160, were made to then up and coming sculptor C.D.Richardson. In 1969 RMIT lecturer Gerard Herbst arranged an exhibition the work of his Industrial Design students at the NGV’s Design Centre. In ‘Design with Paper' the students explored the characteristics of a sheet of paper, an exercise based on similar ones set by Josef Albers at the Bauhaus, Germany and Black Mountain College, USA. From its beginnings in 1958, the Society has mounted exhibitions and/or displays, in early days in shop window and in community spaces located in the Kew City Hall (later Kew Library), and since 2010 at the Kew Court House. A widows' function at Legacy House. It was the 'Great Tea Party' in June 1992 when the widows rooms were opened after 9 months of renovations. Keesing Photographers took a series of photos on the same day of various ladies. Some of the same ladies are in 00654 and 00656). John R. NEESON (1948- ) Between 2003 and 2005 John R. Neeson was a part-time lecturer at the Federation University Arts Academy. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. During May through to July 1920 Prince Edward, later to become King Edward VIII of England toured Australia to thank the country for its support during World War One and to strengthen ties between Australia and the United Kingdom. He arrived in Victoria on the 26 May 1920 and on the 29 May attended a special agricultural show at the Royal Agricultural Showgrounds at Flemington. Bacchus Marsh district was invited to contribute to a display of agricultural produce and products which was displayed in the Government Pavilion at the Showgrounds. The display according to a newspaper report in the Bacchus Marsh Express on 5 June 1920 included 33 trays of fresh fruit, preserved fruit, pickles, sauces, bacon and other small goods, vegetables, hay grasses, grain, turned wood, wines and other drinks', &c., aided by pot plants, flags, draping of maroon and gold (official Exhibit colors) made up a color scheme and general effect worthy of the occasion. The Prince inspected the exhibit and expressed his admiration of it, his only regret was that he could not give more time to its examination. There was also 'an improvised "pheasant" nestling in one corner, and what "amazing" eyes it had!'. The organiser of the display was F. C. Minns, and the decorator was T. Stewart. This photograph is notable for its size and high quality framing. This signifies the importance the local community placed upon being chosen to participate in a major royal event and the desire to record this in a grand and elaborate way for posterity. Very large framed photograph of the agricultural produce and products from the Bacchus Marsh district displayed as part of a special exhibition for Prince Edward, the heir to the British throne when he visited Melbourne in May 1920. The display comprised a wide variety of produce such as fresh and preserved fruit, meats, vegetables, hay, grasses, grain, turned wood, wines and other drinks.
