These nails have no provenance but may have been used to hang pictures or as studs for farm buildings etc. Limited significance but typical of nails previously in regular use.These are 13 large iron nails. Two of them are shorter than the others and have a top with a brass edging and a white oval shaped inset of porcelain or enamel material. This book was written by Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), a famous and influential English Protestant preacher who attracted a great following in the 19th century, not only in England, but throughout the British Empire and U.S.A. He reached the masses by producing many religious tracts, costing one penny, and publishing his sermons and his John Ploughman books with their simple homilies. These books were sub-titled ‘Plain Talk for Plain People’ with the copy we have being the second in the series labelled ‘140th thousand’ and published in 1892, the year of Spurgeon’s death. It appears that Spurgeon’s books were in many a home in Warrnambool in the 19th century. This book is of great interest as one which was familiar to many residents of Warrnambool and district in the 19th century. Charles Spurgeon was apparently widely known to Warrnambool residents in the 19th century. The Warrnambool Examiner newspaper frequently carried news items about Spurgeon’s eloquent preaching and the crowds he was drawing. It also published some of his sermons from time to time and reported at length his final illness and death. One of the unidentified photograph albums in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society contains a photograph of Charles Spurgeon and his wife. This is a book of 158 pages with some of the pages missing at the end. The book is coverless and held together with string and a piece of glued paper. On Feb 3rd 1948, the Mt Beauty State School was opened with 28 pupils in all grades up to VII. Classes began in the SECV Recreation Hall, which was converted to classrooms during the school week and returned to a recreation hall on weekends for motion pictures and social occasions for SECV workers and their families. A new school building was opened in 1950 on the current school site, with an enrolment of 170 primary and secondary students. A further extension of 4 buildings was added in 1951 with a population increase to 303 students. In May 1953, the status of the school was raised to Higher Elementary School with a total of 403 students. In 1958, the school population rose to a high of 617 students with 436 in primary and 181 in secondary. In 1964, the status of the secondary section of Mt Beauty HES was raised to a High School and was moved to separate facilities in the west of town in September 1964 Pictorial history of children who attended Mt Beauty Higher Elementary School in 1960. Many of the students would have had parents working on the Hydro-Electric Scheme in and around Mt Beauty. Many of the children would also have been the descendants of parents who immigrated to Australia as foreign workers on the Hydro Electric Scheme such as Alex Van De Ruijt, whose parents were Dutch. A gardening book useful as a reference for gardeners and horticulturists. Illustrated with detailed coloured pictures.This book was possibly part of a school library in the Kiewa Valley. Bogong school had a reputation for an excellent library especially with regard to nature. Hard covered brown book with gold embossed writing on the cover and spine including the title, author, part 11 and Price 2/6. Spine has black stamp near the base indicating it was in a library. Includes coloured Plates which illustrate the text - showing the insects and plants. Inside the covers the pages are a pale green floral type decoration. Members of the Kiewa Valley Historical Society contributed to compiling various histories. Motion pictures were shown from 1947 during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme for the entertainment of workers and families.Dave Davies wrote the history of the showing of motion pictures in the Kiewa Valley for the Kiewa Valley Historical Society. This business card advertised the business of Charles Hider who had a stationery and book shop in Liebig Street from the 1860s to the 1880s. (63 Liebig Street today). He also sold photographs and pictures, picture frames, pianos and other musical instruments and homeopathic medicines and was an agent for local newspapers and overseas magazines. The stamp on one side of the card shows Liebig Street spelled ‘Liebeg’, suggesting that the stamp was perhaps made in the 1860s when ‘Liebeg’ was the common spelling of the street name. Charles Hider’s brother James also had a book and stationery store in Warrnambool in Timor Street in the 19th century. This card is of considerable interest as it belonged to Charles Hider, a prominent businessman in Warrnambool in the 19th century. It also shows the type of business card used in the 19th century.This is a small business card from Charles Hider, a 19th century Warrnambool bookseller and stationer. It is buff-coloured on one side with a stamp of Charles Hider on a white background and a sketch of a sprig of daisies with foliage. The flowers are coloured red, white and green. On the other side is information on the items sold in Hider’s shop and other services offered. The information is printed in black on a buff-coloured background. ‘Chas. ARTIST WALTER WITHEBS, whose pictures are now on exhibition at his Melbourne studio on Wednesdays and Saturdays, is an Englishman by birth, but an ardent Australian by adoption. His landscapes are "racy of the soil,” and amongst the most successful work of the kind done by Victorian artists.
