There is an Alexis Harold Safstrom No 1723, 38th Batt 1st reinforcements then 59th Batt. He was WIA twice and discharged on 31.8.1919. There are two Woodheads with an initial L. This is possibly L.H.B Woodhead No 728, 8th Batt then late in the war 25th Batt. He was WIA twice coming home late 1918. The colour patch on the uniform is possibly 8th Batt. Safstrom was from Heathcote which fits in with the donor of the items Mrs May Burns. Woodhead was from Mildura. The only connection could be that they were both in England at the same time the card was written. Bandmaster Hugh McMahon is noted for conducing the McMahon's Brass Band (Hillgrove Brass Band) from 1892 - 1900. He was a very famous bandmaster and he, and his brothers, were all extremely competent musicians. In 1897 the McMahon's band competed in Tamworth and won the competition. Their closet rival, the Hillgrove Town Band was placed third. Unfortunately the McMahon's Band was wound up in 1900 when the six McMahon brother followed their brother John to the Western Australia goldfields at Kalgoorlie-Boulder.The photo is remarkable for its condition and completeness. Here we have a photo of 20 bandsmen who have just won a competition dressed in very neat suits. We can also see a distinctive crest on the bass drum and the two trombone players are playing valve trombones. The photo is also significant as it shows one of the two Hillgrove brass bands that were in existence at the time and this was while Hillgrove was a bustling mining town. The photos relate to a collection re Robert O’Donahoo No 1399 AIF WW1. Refer Cat No 1500 for his service history. .1) Robert is the soldier with the arrow pointing down to him. On the rear of the card is a letter to his Mother which appears to be dated Oct 22nd 1915. He tells his mother about a 2nd operation on his leg that was amputated. Sister West is the Nurse behind him and the other is Sister Raymond. .2) The Hospital where Raymond was admitted to in England. .3) On the rear of the Post card in pen, “twin Sisters UREN who were on the Hospital ship Thermistocles on the way home in 1916, they lived in Adelaide. .4) Robert O’Donahoo is the Soldier standing on the left, on the rear of the photo in blue pen, “Caulfield Hospital 1916” The twin Sisters were Catherine Temby UREN, Amelia UREN. Believed to be addressed to her cousin, Mary Ann Shillinglaw, from May ? - This could be Ethel May Bottle b. 1883, daughter of Edward Henry Bottle and step-daughter of Catherine Shillinglaw but this type of post-card photo only commenced in 1905 when she would have been 22. The girl looks more like 15. It is not known if Elizabeth Docherty (nee Shillinglaw) had any children. Born 1861 and married 1894 at 33 years of age, it is possible that she could have had a daughter who would have been 15 in 1910. "Dear Mary I hope this will find you all well. I hope Uncle Phillip is better. This is for the home it is among the lot. You must excuse me for sending one among the lot I haven’t enough to go all round. Postcards were posted or exchanged in huge numbers. Postal authorities in Australia only allowed the private printing of postcards from 1898. At this time the back of the card was reserved for the address and postage stamp, and the front was used for the message and a picture. In 1902 British authorities allowed a "divided back", so that the left side could be used for the message, the right side for the address and stamp, and the whole of the front was devoted to the picture. This card together with a log book was a vital record of service for any seaman serving on a Merchant vessel that had been commandeered for War transport work and needed to be validated to ensure eligibility to be taken on as qualified member of the crew. G.W. Duncan appears to have specialised in engine room and mechanical maintenance. He appears to have served aboard a number of vessels including merchant vessels commissioned into wartime service in WW2.Mariner Duncan had a particular regard for the Mission to Seafarers. This plate for display on a commissioned new table at the MTSV chapel acknowledges his bequest and the material donated. Collectively the G W Duncan material includes: photographs, professional data memorabilia and written and commercially printed resources.
