Laurie McCabe was in charge of Beech Forest Station until October 1929. When the timber industry went into decline because of poor markets and the crippling effects of the 1929 strike, and when road haulage signalled the beginning of a new transport era it was the beginning of the end. As a result staffing levels were severely cut over the period 1927/29 with the two station masters at Beech Forest and Gellibrand replaced by caretakers in October 1929. The line was then supervised by travelling station masters of whom Laurie McCabe was one of two.B/W. The original Mitcham Station was opened on 25th December 1882. Until the 1970s a shunting yard and goods shed existed where the southern car park is now. Tracks remained embedded in the car park for many years. In 1979 boom gates were provided at both Mitcham Road and Rooks Road. From December 2009 to January 2010 Mitcham Railway Station was used as a bus interchange when the realignment of tracks and construction of a new station occurred at Nunawading. Until 1925 Beech Forest saw three trains or six train movements each day, from 6.50,am until 3.05 pm, and the railway personnel reflected this movement. A Station Master, porter, goods clerk, train crew, engine cleaner and track gang were employed. While economic activity slowed a little bit after this it still remained vigorous for another three years. However, the frequency of goods trains started to decrease from 1926 when the small NA class locomotives were partly replaced by a Garratt engine that had greater hauling power. Three regular train services continued to run each day, two of these being NA drawn and the other a Garratt train.B/W. Kew Railway Station (1887-1959). ‘Kew Railway Station’ in Denmark Street was the terminus of the Kew Line, which extended from Hawthorn Station to just south of Wellington Street. The Station opened on 19 December 1887 after a prolonged campaign for a railway by the people of Kew. Due to a decline in patronage, the passenger service ceased operations in August 1952. While a freight service continued for another five years, the line and station were officially closed on 13 May 1957. Subsequently demolished in 1959, the headquarters of VicRoads (formerly Country Roads Board) now stands on the former Station site.This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. This is one of eight embroidered panels, completed during the 1988 Australian Bi-Centennial, and carried out under the auspices of City of Kew Council and the Kew Historical Society. Nearly 600 residents, including many children, participated in their production by adding a few or more stitches. A book records their names and the panels upon which they worked.
