The Victoria District of Rechabites (District No. 82) was established in the 28th January 1861 with the transfer of Star of Australia Felix Tent No. 4 of the Tasmania District (which was established in Melbourne on the 25th January 1847) and Mount Alexander Tent No. 9 of the Tasmania District (began in Castlemaine on the 26th January 1860).In its heyday the Victoria Rechabites’ membership numbers grew and grew to the extent that there were at one stage in excess of 36,000 members associated with the Victorian Rechabites in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s covering approximately 250 operating Tents. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.The National Trust citation in 1960 stated that Houghton (dem.) appeared to date from the 1850's and might possibly be of prefabricated construction. Although modified, it contained substantial external evidence of its early construction and is one of the few buildings remaining in Kew from this early period. It was used at one stage as a doctor's surgery and residence - the surgery being at the rear of the property. Painting - Annie Halfey, c.1882
Annie Halfey (nee Marston) was the daughter of Carlington George E. Marston, a chemist of Smith Street, Collingwood. Marston had extensively speculated on land in Kew and in this way had made his money. Marston was the owner of 'Wimba' in Cotham Road, having purchased the house in 1879. Annie Marston married the eminent Victorian pioneer John Halfey, and together they made their home at Ordsall (later Southesk) in Cotham Road, Kew. She died in March 1909.
