Photograph, The Prince's Show May 1920 Bacchus Marsh District Exhibit
During May through to July 1920 Prince Edward, later to become King Edward VIII of England toured Australia to thank the country for its support during World War One and to strengthen ties between Australia and the United Kingdom. He arrived in Victoria on the 26 May 1920 and on the 29 May attended a special agricultural show at the Royal Agricultural Showgrounds at Flemington. Bacchus Marsh district was invited to contribute to a display of agricultural produce and products which was displayed in the Government Pavilion at the Showgrounds. The display according to a newspaper report in the Bacchus Marsh Express on 5 June 1920 included 33 trays of fresh fruit, preserved fruit, pickles, sauces, bacon and other small goods, vegetables, hay grasses, grain, turned wood, wines and other drinks', &c., aided by pot plants, flags, draping of maroon and gold (official Exhibit colors) made up a color scheme and general effect worthy of the occasion. The Prince inspected the exhibit and expressed his admiration of it, his only regret was that he could not give more time to its examination. There was also 'an improvised "pheasant" nestling in one corner, and what "amazing" eyes it had!'. The organiser of the display was F. C. Minns, and the decorator was T. Stewart. This photograph is notable for its size and high quality framing. This signifies the importance the local community placed upon being chosen to participate in a major royal event and the desire to record this in a grand and elaborate way for posterity. Very large framed photograph of the agricultural produce and products from the Bacchus Marsh district displayed as part of a special exhibition for Prince Edward, the heir to the British throne when he visited Melbourne in May 1920. The display comprised a wide variety of produce such as fresh and preserved fruit, meats, vegetables, hay, grasses, grain, turned wood, wines and other drinks. The image is divided in the middle into two different angles of the display.A caption in gold lettering at the foot of the image reads 'The Prince's Show May 1920 Bacchus Marsh District Exhibit Royal Agricultural Society Showgrounds'royal visits, shows and exhibitions -

Painting - Watercolour, Mitchell, John, [Scottish Scene] by John Mitchell
John MITCHELL (1837 - 14 July 1926) Born Woodside, Donside, Scotland John Mitchell attended evening classes under James Giles in Aberdeen, and was also taught by his uncle the Peterhead artist John Mitchell. After an apprenticeship at a local lithographic company (Keith and Gibb) John Mitchell went to London to study at the Slade under Legros. Returning to Aberdeen he painted many scenes around the city and Aberdeenshire, including Balmoral, under the patronage of Queen Victoria. John Mitchell gave lessons in painting to the Royal Family. His landscapes are highly coloured with dominant blues and purples in the hills and with vivid greens and yellows in the foreground, subtly fused and never garish. He lithographed sketches for John Stewart's 'The Sculptured Stones of Scotland', 2 vols 1856-57, illustrated 'Under Lochnagar' 1894. His landscapes of Aberdeenshire are highly prized especially in the area in which he lived. His painting in the Mearns is regarded by some as his best work. In 1875 he painted an interior of Culter Castle and its Chapel which was subsequently purchased by the owner and in 1883 showed a portrait of his mother. Lived latterly at 10 Gladstone Place, Queen's Cross, Aberdeen. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Audio - Sound recording, ABC Hindsight: Hearing the Blind, 13 December 2001
ABC Radio show 'Hindsight" which looks at the historical, and not so historical, limitations that were placed on blind and vision impaired people through the twentieth century. Through interviews with various people who lost or were born with limited or no sight as well as historian Judith Buckrich, the changes over the last 150 years about the politics of the blind and the thinking around it are reflected upon. From the first institute for the blind set up in Victoria in 1866, there have been restrictions on conditions, access of service, working life, education, travel, voting rights, attitudes on using white canes or dog guides, pensions, workers rights, and socialising between blind men and women. The impact of Helen Keller's visit in 1948 resulted in some changes, however many other groups such as the Blind Workers Union, and individuals like Tilly Aston, worked to put blind people in charge of their lives and in the institutions that affected them. 1 sound file of radio show interviewroyal victorian institute for the blind, judith buckrich, dorothy hamilton, barry palmer, anna fairclough, alice mcclelland, harry worland, megan denyer, david blyth, john murphy, major general paul cullen, roy hallett, martin stewart, nick gleeson, jennifer bowen, abc radio -
