During World War II, over 22,000 Australian became prisoners of war to the Japanese. Most of them were captured at the fall of Singapore in February 1942 and were forced to march to Changi (the major Prisoner of War camp). Later on, the soldiers would be dispersed throughout South East Asia. Upon their return to Australia, very few of them told talked about their experience as prisoners (they often felt ashamed). It took almost 30 years before testimonies, books and documentaries would be published. This ship model was built by Australian prisoners of wars.Model of a Spanish or Portugese 18th Century sailing ship, manufactured from timber, fabric and string. Neville Bunning taught Sculpture and Ceramics at the School of Mines and Industry, Ballarat between 1945 and 1964. During that time he formed the Ballarat Artist’s Society, a group that sponsored art and invited modernist artists to visit Ballarat to speak to students and the public. Rudder from the tug boat YORK SYME, built in 1961 by ADELAIDE SHIP CONSTRUCTION INTERNATIONAL - PORT ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA. It is sailing under the flag of the Cook Islands. Its gross tonnage is 149 tons. The rudder is believed to come from a lifeboat previously attached to the Tug. The tug York Syme operated in various ports in New Zealand until around 2011. It is believed this is when it went to the Cook Islands. The registered owner is unknown at this time.The rudder is from the 1961 Tug York Syme. Its size suggests it was from the tug's lifeboat or ancillary boat. It is an example of marine technology from the mid-20th century. Although small, it works on similar principles to 19th-century rudders from the large sailing ships. A comparison of size and construction can be made between the various rudders from different eras in our collection.Rudder; small blonde wooden rudder from a small boat. It has two brass fittings. A thin spliced rope has been passed through a hole near the rudder's neck. This is a photograph of Army Survey Regiment personnel undertaking surveying measurements during a search for the ‘Mahogany Ship’ Warrnambool, VIC on 3rd September1985. CPL Mark Lander and SGT Don Williams were taking electronic distance measurements using an MRA-301 tellurometer. To measure the distance, personnel at another site operating another MRA-301 tellurometer would have exchanged the signal emission. The Elverland, a New Zealand barque, was in Victoria in August 1906. It was wrecked in January 1907 near the Three Kings Islands (Manawatāwhi) on its way to Auckland from Newcastle with a cargo of coal. This passenger ticket is a copy from an original held by the Old Colonists' Association of Ballarat. The original was glued onto a page in a large album of photographic images of early Ballarat. Recognising their significance the Council of the Old Colonists’ Association had them removed and restored. The originals are now framed and on display in the Old Colonists’ Hall.Digital copy of an original passenger ticket for the Ship Duke of Richmond purchased by Frederick Laing for a cabin passage.
