Set of four letters between the Manager TB and Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo tramways between the period of 27 Dec. 1929 and 30 July 1930 regarding the "Australasian Tramway Conference. See image files for details of the letterhead of the various company offices. 1972.1 - Letter from the Engineer and Manager of the Melbourne Electric Supply Company Limited, Melbourne office advising Mr. A. D. Murdoch, Manager of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board that he had forwarded the questionnaire to their Geelong Engineer for completion. Dated 30/12/1929. Stamped as being received by the TB as 31/12/1929. See image 1972i1 for image of letter. 1972.2 - Letter from the Chief Accountant of ESCo Ballarat, to the Manager TB acknowledging receipt of the letter dated 24/12/1929 regarding the questionnaire and saying Mr. Pringle is on holidays and will be attended to on his return. Dated 27/12/1929 and stamped as being received by the TB as 28/12/1929. See image 1972i2 for image of letter. 1972.3 - Carbon copy of a letter on pink paper from Manager TB to Mr. G.F. Cole, Resident Engineer and Local Manager of ESCo ( Ballarat) regarding the questionnaire - too late to be included. Dated 9/7/1930. 1972.4 - Letter from Mr. G.F. Cole, Resident Engineer and Local Manager of ESCo Bendigo office - forwarding the questionnaire to the TB and apologising for the late arrival. On letterhead of the ESCo Bendigo office - see image 1972i1 for image of letter. Dated 5 July 1930, and received by TB on 7/7/1930. Questionnaire (attached to 1972.4) details sections and fares, section lengths, holiday fares, workmen's fares, scholars' fares (no concessions) details of concession fares, postmen fares, health nurses, employees, periodical tickets, prepaid tickets. One worn TB uniform clothing buttons donated by a former Ballarat Tram driver. Button about 23 diameter, with TB crest, with backing piece and lug for sewing on rear. Nickel plated silver? Badge has been worn on a jacket as in poor condition compared to new. Has name of manufacturer stamped on rear part - "Buttons Ltd" of Birmingham, England with their trade mark, a pair of fully opened scissors. See tm1762i2 for image. Commonly known as Miner's Complaint, silicosis, tuberculosis or a combination of both resulted in phthisis. This was directly caused by the inhalation of silica dust resulting from drilling into quartz reefs. Lungs weakened by silicosis were more susceptible to the TB bacterium. At first the difference between these two ailments was unknown as was the mode of the spread of TB. In 1903 there was a call for better ventilation in mines and for the use of water hoses to dampen down the dust. Photograph shows a group of five cable tramway employees with a cart containing batteries to supply power for lights in Melbourne Cable trams. This lighting was introduced by the Tramway Board (TB), the forerunner to the MMTB during 1917. A motor generator at each car house or depot provided the power to charge the batteries which were then placed in each tram for the day. Reference - The Commonwealth Engineer 1/8/1917 - Reg Item 2568. The equipment was provided by the General Electric Company. The cart has the letters "TB CH" possibly indicating Clifton Hill Depot and the batteries are lettered "NE" and then given a number. Photo date unknown - 1917 to 1940. This photograph is Public Records Office photo H84 in the Victorian Railways collection.Yields information about the type of batteries used to provide lighting power to cable trams and the workers involved and their clothing. Brass Conductor Communication Bell, or signal bell, consisting of cast frame, bell, striker, bell pull part, one nut and washer to secure the bell to the frame and two rivets securing for the bell pull part. Used by a cable tram conductor to record the number of 2d fares collected from passengers. The Bell punch recorded the number of times a hole was punched in the slip. They were used by the cable trams until the mid-1920s when they were phased out and replaced by "flimsy" paper tickets. The item has been punched a number of times. Printed for the Tramway Board (1916 to 1919). Has space for 32 journeys. On one side, has space for the name Line, Date, Badge, car, time of starting, and signature, if a student conductor. One of four bells that would have been fitted to the tram.Demonstrates a conductors communication bell made for use on tramcars. Murdoch, General Manager of the TB Melbourne regarding rates of pay for conductors and drivers. 1977.1 - Letter from Mr. Pringle to Mr. Murdoch dated 27/8/1929, received by TB 28/8/1929, thanking for information regarding rates of pay. On ESCo letterhead. Has file number "22/1/2" in pencil in top right hand corner. Has been folded into 6. Damaged on right and bottom edges - folded and creased. 1977.2 - Carbon copy on pink paper from Mr. Murdoch to Mr. Pringle, dated 21/8/1929, advising the fares for conductors and drivers in 1923 and 1929 on a per day basis. Thomas Burch Ford (1818-1892) began producing blotting paper and filter papers for personal and industrial use, after taking over Slade's Original Handmade Blotting Company in 1881. John Letts produced the first commercially available diary in 1812. In 1835 the business was taken over by his son Thomas and grandson Charles John joined the company in 1870. In 1881, after a brief hiatus, Charles restarted the business as Charles Letts and Company, the name it retains today.
