Tait collection: item 48 of 62 This is a document giving details of the Will and Probate of William James Osborne, a Tallangatta farmer who died in 1896 at the age of 59. His death place is given as Tower Hill. A William Osborne is listed as a Wangoom farmer in 1856, a farmer at ‘Thompson’s Old Farm’ in Allansford in 1866 and a farmer at Winton Farm on the Allansford Road near Shipley in 1869 but these references may be to William Osborne’s father as there is mention of a William Osborne, Junior at that time. William James Osborne left real estate to the value of £560 and personal estate to the value of £81 to his wife, Hannah. The lawyer who drew up this document was Ernest Chambers who had legal offices in Warrnambool, Koroit and Port Fairy at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. He was in possession of this document and it has passed down to successive lawyers occupying the legal premises in Kepler Street where it was located in 2014 (former premises of the law firm of Mackay Taylor). This document is of interest as it gives details of the Will and Probate of William James Osborne, a farmer in the Allansford area in the 19th century. This is a cream-coloured piece of parchment paper folded in two to make four pages. Three of the pages have handwritten material in brown ink and the pages are not ruled. A seal of the Supreme Court of Victoria is attached with a green ribbon and there is one red stamp of the Master in Equity of the Supreme Court. The document is somewhat stained but legible. The document gives details of the Will and Probate of William Osborne of Tallangatta in the County of Heytesbury. He died in 1896. Five Australian Christmas Carols was written by John Wheeler and music by William G James. William James came from Ballarat and John Wheeler was from Colac. James was a concert pianist who graduated from the Melbourne Conservatorium. He went to London and played the Proms and wrote a series of Australian themed songs for Dame Nellie Melba. He became the first Federal director of Music for the ABC until 1957. It was at the ABC that he met Wheeler a staff writer who wrote verse and songs. These five carols which have a distinct Australian flavor, were written between 1848 and 1957.While this collection has no direct link to Warrnambool, the works contained in the collection Five Australian Christmas Carols would have social significance as the carols would be familiar to a number of people. Base of this dinner gong is made from a name plate off a steam engine that was found in the Northern Territory. The two ends supporting the gong are made of either anti tank of anti aircraft bullets that are soldered into salt and pepper shakers that were acquired from a Chinese 'Joss House' in the Northern Territory. The kangaroo and boomerang were copied from an Australian penny.Brass dinner gong suspended on a stainless steel kangaroo and boomerang. Side pillars are made with brass bullets standing on brass salt and pepper shakers. Also includes brass gavel. This is a Memorandum of Agreement between the Registrar of the School of Mines - William Henry Barnard and the Collector of Monies for the school - James Johnston Twining. It states the length of time the monies can be held by the collector - 48 hours. It then must be paid into the Union Bank of Australia, Melbourne, to the credit of the Council of the School. The Collector was paid Five Pounds per year plus Ten Percent in every hundred pounds collected at the end of each month. Either party could terminate the agreement. He died in 1933 and the property passed to his wife and thereafter to their only son Allan Larard Donaldson, born 1917. The house was known as "Goodwood". Kate Amelia Donaldson was a music teacher. William James Capewell, Ernest James Andrew and George Harrison all of Eltham collected the sum of £150 towards the purchase of Lot 20 Henry Street and whereby a Contract of Sale dated 30 December 1921 agreed to purchase (as Trustees of The Eltham Hall to be used in perpetuity for the benefit of the inhabitants of the Eltham District) the land, furniture, fittings and chattels from Jack Alfred Harrison, George Hugh Bird and Edward Samuel McColl for £750. The first President was declared to be Ernest James Andrew, Honorary Secretary, A.J. Morse, Honorary Treasurer, Charles Robert Nicholls and the first elective committee to be Thomas Nunn Jewell, William John Pasco, George Burchall, William James Burgess, John William Cox, Ernest James Andrew, John Michael Ryan, Frederick William Gillespie Didfield, Charles Harold Williams, Joseph Banks, Laurence Bourke, Charles Robert Nicholls, William James Capewell and James Pascal. At the commencement of 1922, the property was purchased from the Independent Order of Rechabites with publicly subscribed funds and a new hall built at a cost of £750 and improved road access constructed to reduce the grade, running from Dudley Street to Henry Street. This hall was eventually replaced with the new Shire Offices and Hall built on the corner of Arthur Street and Main Road, which was opened in 1941.
