Medal, Victory Medal 1914-19, 01/09/1919
The Victory Medal (also called the Allied Victory Medal) is a campaign medal - of which the basic design and ribbon was adopted by Belgium, Brazil, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Romania, Siam, Union of South Africa and the USA. The medal was issued to all those who received the 1914 Star or the 1914-15 Star, and to most of those who were awarded the British War Medal - it was never awarded singly. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred. The Holgate medals were the first war medals held by BCC archives. They have historical and social significance for the College. The Victory Medal is a 36mm diameter circular copper medal, lacquered in bronze. The obverse shows the winged, full-length, full-front, figure of Victory, with her left arm extended and holding a palm branch in her right hand. The reverse has the words ‘THE GREAT / WAR FOR / CIVILISATION / 1914-1919' in four lines, all surrounded by a laurel wreath. The 39mm wide ribbon has a ‘two rainbow' design, with the violet from each rainbow on the outside edges moving through to a central red stripe where both rainbows meet. The reverse has the words ‘THE GREAT / WAR FOR / CIVILISATION / 1914-1919' in four linesworld war one, ballarat college, victory medal, w w 1, e s holgate, allied victory medal -

Encased in a glass frame with wood (painted black) lining the edge. From TROVE: Chronicle (Adelaide, SA : 1895 - 1954), Thursday 1 April 1948, page 8 Legacy Conference In Adelaide Addressing delegates from all States at a convention of Intermediate Legacy Clubs last week, His Excellency the Governor (Sir Willoughby Norrie), who was accompanied by Lady Norrie, said that Adelaide regarded it as a privilege to be chosen as the venue of the first of what might become a series of annual conferences on the general policy of Intermediate Legacy of Australia. His Excellency stressed that the objects of Intermediate Legacy were to foster the spirit of comradeship, self-sacrifice and service, and to establish a high standard of citizenship and a spirit of responsibility in national development. 'Anything to do with Legacy has the strongest support of Lady Norrie and myself,' continued the Governor. 'Membership of Intermediate Legacy is open to the children of deceased servicemen who have passed the age of 16. There is no upper limit, although in 1945 a Senior Intermediate Club was formed in Adelaide for men returned from the services, or who, ineligible for service, had attained the age of 25. Souvenir - Princess Mary 1914 Christmas Gift Tin, Princess Mary’s 1914 Christmas Gift Tin, November/December 1914
In November 1914, an advertisement was placed in the British national press inviting monetary contributions to a 'Sailors and Soldiers Christmas Fund' which had been created by Princess Mary, the 17 year old daughter of King George V and Queen Mary. The purpose was to provide everyone wearing the King's uniform and serving overseas on Christmas Day with a 'gift from the nation'. The response was overwhelming, and it was decided to spend the money on an embossed brass box, based on a design by Messrs Adshead and Ramsay. The contents varied considerably; officers and men on active service afloat or at the front received a box containing a combinationof pipe, lighter, tobacco and 20 cigarettes and wrappers. Non smokers received a bullet pencil and a packet of sweets instead. Indian troops often got sweets and spices, and nurses were given chocolate. This box is on loan from the grandson of the soldier who it was given to.This box is on loan from Terry Phillips. It belonged to his Grandfather who served at Gallipoli.Princess Mary 1914 Christmas Gift tin. Decorative brass with Princess Mary's profile surrounded by a laurel wreath engraved in the the centre of the lid, with the letter 'M' on both sides. The names of the allied nations are engraved in the corners and on the sides. A sword and scabbard decorate the top side. The lower side is decorated with battleships..At the top a decorative cartouche contains the words "Imperium Britannicum" and one on the lower edge contains the words "Christmas 1914". In small roundels on the corners appear the names "Belgium", "Japan", "Montenegro" and "Servia". Letter book 6, Jan 1914 - 1917, 1914
This letter book contains letters, plans and sketch maps dating from 1914 to 1917. It came from the office of John William Crawley Junior, an engineer, architect and surveyor in private practice in Warrnambool and also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1895 to 1935. His father, brother and son were also engineers and worked in that capacity or as the Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire of Warrnambool. This Shire existed from 1863 to 1994. The letter book was passed on the John Crawley’s son, Rolf, engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. It then came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying practice of Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society has acquired the letter book, along with several other Crawley ledgers, from the Michael Hand estate. This letter book is of considerable significance as it contains letters, maps and plans drawn up by John William Crawley, Junior, the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool for 40 years. It will be very useful for researchers. This is a brown hard cover letter book with leather binding on the edges of the cover and on the spine. The leather is worn away in several places. There is gold lettering on the spine. The book has 750 pages of handwritten letters, maps and plans. The inside cover is of a mottled blue colour. There is an alphabetical index at the beginning of the book. ‘6’ ‘Letter Book 1914 to 1917’ john william crawley junior, warrnambool, rolf crawley, warrnambool, shire of warrnambool -
