Charlotte Rippert was a German Lutheran Missionary in Egypt, arrested as a security risk in Cairo, 1941. Keith Charles Hofmaier (1927 - 1994) was one of Ballarat College's most distinguished sons. He attended the school from 1941 - 1945 serving as librarian, school prefect (1945) and member of the Rowing Firsts (1945). After school he became a successful farmer, well-known historian, organist, Freemason, philanthropist and community worker. He continued to give generously to the school and the Weatherly Library throughout his life. He endowed poetry and music prizes in memory of his daughter Ann who died in an accident. The Students' Representative Council gave a clock tot he school library in memory of his contribution to the school in 1994. This infant protectors was donated to the Kew Historical Society by officers of the City of Kew. It was presumably held by the City for protection against gas attacks.Rare piece of WW1 equipment designed to protect infants on the home front.A respirator designed by the US Army O.C.D to be used to protect a baby in case of a gas attack. The respirator comprises a green pliofilm bag with a draw-string to secure the bag after a baby was placed in it. A hose and hand-action pump provides air for the baby. The 18 letters are from Arthur Edmund TRANTER V50166 & VX52843 POW. they are to his wife Pat and Daughter Brenda from Darley Camp Australia, at Sea then in Malaya prior to becoming a POW. The exercise book was written by "Tranter" to his daughter Brenda while a POW in "Gloegoer Camp" near "Medan" in Northern Sumatra. It was dedicated to his daughter. He managed to keep this hidden throughout captivity in pristine condition. Throughout the book there are subheadings, Sumatra, Singapore, Rubber, Soedaa, Siboertoet, Malacca, The story of the Cocos Islands, the Celebes, Dutch Borneo. They are the stories of these places. Some are from talks given by Officers to the men. There are two more Archival folders, Cat No's 7956.2 & 7958.2. Refer Cat No 7944 for E.A.
