A typed letter designed to be copied and circulated to members of Stan Savige's 'old mob' recounting events in Greece and Crete in 1941. Legatee Savige was deployed in Greece and this letter recounts the withdrawal of his company and those of Walker and Wrigley. He mentions Thermopylae, Kalamai, and evacuation via the ship Costa Rica, which was bombed by German planes and sunk, which resulted in Walker's mob being lost. Thomas John Kent (b. 1/9/18, d. 13/3/1998) married Florence Janet Hughes (b. 5/1/1921, d. 24/3/2011) on 15/11/1941. In the 1943 Electoral Roll they were recorded living at Watson St, McLeod and in 1949 at Mt. View Road, Montmorency. (Information gathered from Ancestry.com sources). A letter from Legatee Stan Poppins to Legacy CEO Ivan Layton in February 1973 explaining how he came by a copy of a letter written by Legatee Stan Savige in 1941. Legatee Poppin's wife was then working in an office that had to pass on the letter to other ex-AIF members and she took a copy of the letter. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. Glen Eira Heritage Management Plan (1996) by Andrew Ward and Associates - Vol 3 "Nithsdale", built for J.S. Crouchin 1858 and extended in 1885 with a tower and associated rooms, survives as testimony to the nineteenth century occupation of the vicinity of the Kambrook/Glen Eira Road intersection. Caulfield's Building Heritage by Dr Geulah Solomon, Vol 1 p49 records it as a small Victorian mansion home on bluestone foundations of Italianate style with a tower. Built for J S Chambers circa 1860, it was built in stages and then the land subdivided in the 1920s. Other owners include Adolph F Brockhoff (of Brockhoff Biscuits company). Pietro Lucini owned the building on the right in the attached photograph. He operated a general store here prior to building a new building opposite this site. He was involved in gold mining activities in the early settlement of Spring Creek, now known as Hepburn Springs. Dr Francesco operated a store in building on left. Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors from the 1960’s onwards the Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could be active in civic life. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and at times, international level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when the Mayor was unavailable. Mayoress Anderson was born Mary Gittins at Sandhurst in 1872 and was the daughter of William Bromley Gittins and Susan Horwood.
