These goggles belonged to RAAF Pilot Francis Robertson who crash landed his trainee solo flight tiger moth into Nurse Carters home at Chiltern in 1943. Pilot Officer Robertson then went on to serve in New Guinea whilst flying Tiger Moths and Wirraways. WW2 significance with Francis Robertson having served in the New Guinea Campaign, flying Tiger Moths and Wirraways. He was inducted into Legacy in 1960 after being proposed by Legatee Edgar Sherwan and Legatee Syd Birrell. The Kew Lunatic Asylum was completed in 1871 and opened in 1872. The year 1972 marked its centenary. Over the years, members of staff at the asylum collected records, photographs, publications and plans of the asylum, later hospital. The Society has a number of important collections relating to the asylum and the Children's Cottages. These include the Dr Cliff Judge, the Irena Higgins and the Dr Fred Stamp Collections. This portrait photograph is one of a number of items donated by the family of the late Dr. Fred Stamp who was the last medical superintendent. Dr Frederick Stamp graduated from Bristol Medical School (UK) in 1968. He and his family emigrated to Australia in 1977 to Goulburn (NSW), moving to Melbourne in 1980. He became Superintendent in 1981 until the Hospital's closure in 1988. Since the donation was made, this item has been declared a Permanent Government Record, and has been transferred to the Public Record Office Victoria in 2020.Following their closure, the medical records of the Kew Mental Hospital and the Children's Cottages Kew were relocated to the archives of the relevant Victorian Government Department and also to the Public Records Office of Victoria. Other collections, such as the Fred Stamp Collection, were assembled by staff who worked at the hospital. The years leading up to the closure of Kew must have been fraught, and many of the items in the hospital were probably destined for hard waste disposal. Dr. Fred Stamp, the medical superintendent, kept aside or rescued a number of these items, of which this is one. Following his death, his family donated these to the Kew Historical Society. The Society recognises these items to be of lasting historical significance, essentially due to their provenance and to their rarity. Together they (and the Judge and Higgins Collections) are an invaluable aid for researchers of the treatment of psychiatric illnesses in Victoria.Dr. Alexander P. L. This is a card sent by Mr and Miss Robertson thanking the Warrnambool Club members for their sympathy following a recent bereavement. The Warrnambool Club was established in 1873 as a gentlemen’s club and the Warrnambool Club building in Kepler Street, still standing today, was erected in 1877. No information is available on the Robertson family except that they lived in Penshurst but it is presumed that Mr Robertson was a member of the Warrnambool Club.This card is of interest as it has a social history showing the type of bereavement card used in the early 1900s – a plain card with a black edging. These cards could be purchased in bulk with a blank sheet for inserting the relevant details. The connection with the Warrnambool Club and the Robertson family is also of interest.This is a small cream-coloured card with black edging. It has handwritten material on it written in black ink. Framed portrait of David Robertson who was the first President of the Association for the Advancement of the Blind, from 1895-1899. It is part of a series of paintings commissioned by the VAF Board to commemorate the work of past presidents of the organisation. Mr Robertson sits with his hands resting upon a wooden cane. He is wearing dark spectacles, a gray suit and waistcoat, white shirt with starched collar and pleated front, and a red and blue striped necktie. On his left lapel is a blue and red medal. David Robertson was educated at the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind and was trained as a basket maker. He was one of eight foundation members of the Association for the Advancement of the Blind (now Vision Australia Foundation ) which was formed in 1895 in order to encourage blind people to manage their own affairs and build their self esteem. He was appointed the inaugural president and served as such from 1895 to 1899 and again in 1913 as well as acting as vice president from 1900 to 1902 and in 1911 and 1915. Known as a level headed and wise peacemaker he was elected chairman of the first interstate conference of blind people, which took place in Melbourne in 1913. First published in 1932 and designed to fit into an average sized pocket for easy reference, this booklet was published in response to an upswing in the popularity of old time dances and reels. The fourth edition was published in 1937 and the 7th Edition was published in 1944. Robertson and Mullens , publishing company was formed in 1922 by the merger of George Robertson and Company and Melville and Mullen. Mullen and Robertson were friends who had immigrated from Scotland together and had initially set up separate bookselling and publishing businesses. The century-old paintings of Bendigo gold mines made the long journey home from Western Australia in 2012. The paintings of the Great extended Hustler’s Mine, Bendigo, and Koch’s Pioneer Gold Mine, Long Gully, were painted by C.G Robertson in 1901.For years the paintings sat in the Perth house of Charles and Grace Strue; however Ian and Katinka Napier, the grand-daughter of Mr and Mrs Strue, donated the paintings to the Bendigo Historical Society.DVD. 8375a: The Victorian soldier settlement scheme created in 1917 to lease farming land to soldiers and nurses returning from WW1. The Scheme was heavily criticised. Some reasons for this were the settlers' lack of capital, the size of the land allocated, and the prices of agricultural products both purchased and sold by the farmers. In the wake of WW2, the soldier settlement scheme was refined and, under the supervision of the Soldier Settlement Commission, was re-established. The Yarraberb Settlement was one of the settlements established in 1948. 8375b: Archibald Edmund "Archie" Robertson was born in Eaglehawk in 1884 to Martin Robertson and Anna Margaretha/Hannah Marguerita (nee. Weseloh/Wesloah). Robertson was a commissioned officer during WW1 and contributed to the welfare and advancement of the California Gully community. Following his death in 1922, following a fall from his bike, the community honoured Robertson with a memorial seat in 1923.A3 colour photocopies of newspaper articles pertaining to the North Central Victoria Region. James Alexander Robertson was born 14th June, 1855, at Pentridge. the Coburg area which was known as Pentridge at the time, and prior to the building of the gaol. His parents were James Thomson Robertson and Esther (nee Hale), At age 20 James became the first selector on the Snowy River at Lochend. He took up Lots 1, 2 and 3, in the Parish of Newmerella in 1875; with his selection being ratified on May 1st, 1876. The selection included hill and river flat land in the area near where Icy Creek enters the Snowy River. James gradually improved and farmed the property; he cleared and drained Icy Creek and constructed the first known flood-gate on the Snowy River. To meet his farming commitments he supplemented his income by working on the construction and maintenance of roads and drains in the Newmerella area. He gained a contract with the Bairnsdale Shire council to construct the first road cutting down Burn’s Hill at Newmerella. His tender was for £16 ($32), and it took him, with four others, two months to complete the contract. He was single, and, after his untimely death at aged 29, in 1884, his parents and surviving unmarried sisters and brothers moved from Sarsfield to take over his selection at Lochend.
