"Cornish immigration in Ballarat tended to group together as they did in Cornish communities around Victoria. The area known as Cornishtown in Ballarat in the 1850s was settled by quiet, religions Cornish Diggers who named the rise on which they pitched their tents, Pleasant Mont. This soon became known as Mount Pleasant, and the locality continued to attract cornish immigrants who built their homes around the Wesleyan Church. This had begun as a small tent chapel where the cornish diggers could worship in the peaceful quiet offered by the mont. As compatriots continued to expand their community, a larger and more subsyantial edifice was required. This plain box like building reflected its Cornish origins in its unpretentious appearance. In conjunction with the fraternal visits of Hearts of Oak and the Maritime Lodge (now defunct), joint chapel services have been held in the chapel of St. Peter at the Missions to Seaman in Flinders St over many years. In 1975, the two lodges jointly funded the donation of a window in the Mission's chapel. The window was also part commissioned by what was then the Kanimbla Association who loaned the artist a book called "Cry Havoc - HMAS Kanimbla, a postscript" of photographs which was very valuable and formed part of Gerry's research. Interestingly the Association wanted the Kanimbla depicted in its post WWII passenger liner livery not during WW2. Commodore Dacre Smyth (1923-2008), designed the two memorial windows for the 106th Anniversary of the Australian Navy and coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the Missions to Seafarers in Melbourne. The windows were dedicated by Reverend Bishop Jeremy Ashton on the 1st of March 2007. This window, in memory of Captain Robert Sunter, was unveiled on the 14 February 1936 performed by Mr R. H. Martin, chief officer of the Manunda. The funds were raised by the crew of the ship Manunda. St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church Built 1859-1867 Foundation stone laid in July 1857, money being raised be subscription and a government grant. Charles Hansom was the Architect, Nathaniel Billing Engineer. Chancel and sacristy were added in 1867, stained glass windows added in 1868. This window, in memory of Alice Sibthorpe Tracy, was unveiled on 31 October 1933 by the Right Reverend R. Stephen D.D. along with the brass tablet in the Williamstown building, and a sectile tablet in the Port Melbourne building. (AR 1933). "A scheme has been set in operation to raise funds so that a memorial may be erected to Miss A. Sibthorpe Tracy, who has done so much for the Victoria Missions to Seamen. It has been decided that a companion window to that of "The Light of the World" will be placed in St. Peter's Chapel, the design being that of a figure of Hope with her hand on a ship's anchor. The window will show a foreground of beach and pebbles, backed by breaking rollers and a flecked sky. Mrs J. W. The mounted photograph is one of a series used for display purposes. The water tower at Sunbury Station was built in 1861 by J. Bett. it is of state significance and is an indicator of the importance of the railway to Sunbury's expansion in the Nineteenth Century. Steam trains needed sufficient steam power to climb the steep gradients over the Great Dividing Range and the water tower at Sunbury was used to replenish the trains' water supply for the remainder of the journey.A black and white photograph of the water tower at Sunbury Railway Station. This model of St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool was made by Johan Carl August Landmann (1826-1920). August Landmann and his wife, Christina came from Silesia to Australia in 1854. They settled in Warrnambool where August made a living as a carpenter and joiner. At first he rented shops in Timor Street and then built a two-storeyed shop and residence in Henna Street. Landmann built many of the early commercial buildings and residences in Warrnambool and he and his family were associated with the management of the Warrnambool Western Brewery. When he retired in 1900 he built another residence in Mickle Street and it was at that time that it is believed he made the model of the Presbyterian Church and the model of the Ozone Hotel (which is in the Warrnambool Art Gallery today). St. John’s Presbyterian Church, designed by Andrew Kerr, was built in the English Gothic style and opened in 1875. It was destroyed by fire in 1920 but was rebuilt to a similar style. This model is of great significance for two reasons: 1. It was made by a prominent early Warrnambool carpenter and joiner, Johan Carl August Landmann. 2. It is the only known model of the Warrnambool St. John’s Presbyterian Church which was destroyed by fire in 1920.This model is on a wooden stand or base which is painted black with metal screws. The edging of the stand contains straw which is now brown but was originally green to resemble grass or lawn. The church is a wooden structure (hollow inside) with some sections painted to resemble sandstone. The roof is slanted and painted grey and has six dormer windows or ventilation pieces on each side. The main body of the church has a nave with dual arched windows, the west end has dual arched windows and a door with louvre ventilation and the east end has a door and dual arched windows and two conical-shaped finials. The windows, some of which are triangular, have frosted decorated glass. Some of the glass in the windows is missing. The main tower is square-shaped with four conical-shaped finials. The upper part has four sets of louvres and two arched windows. The centre and lower sections have rosette patterns and several sets of dual arched windows with frosted decorated glass panels. Known as ‘You Yangs’, 15 Russell Street was built in 1891. 1898–1900: Home of Mr and Mrs John Reaburn, later of 'Fairbank', Union Road. John Reaburn (1873-1963); Jane (Jeannie) Nelson Harkins (1875-1959) 1922–1954: Theodore Hendy and family. Mr Hendy spent some time in South Africa gaining architectural experience. One of his houses, in Barton Street, near the Surrey College has some features which may well relate to South African architecture. He also extended and updated the Surrey Hills Primary School buildings. He was impressed by Baden Powell whom he met in Sth Africa and when he heard about the scouting movement being launched in 1907, he took up the idea and started Surrey Hills Scouts in 1909. The house is extant in 2020. A black and white photograph of a house, possibly late Victorian Boom Style.
