Donald John BURNET No 2130 enlisted in the AIF in 4th reinforcements 60th Batt on 19.5.1916 age 18 years. Embark for England 1.8.1916, embark for France 11.11.1916. He is then returned to England with under age personnel for some reason on 27.12.1916 and proceeds to get himself in trouble. Finally embarks for France on 19.4.1917 and in trouble 2 days later but rejoins his unit on 25.4.1917, hospital 14.6.1917 with a Sprained right Ankle, rejoin unit 21.6.1917, hospital 7.8.1917 with Diptheria and then gets Tonsilitis, rejoin unit 20.9.1917 and is KIA 5 days later on 25.9.1917. Joined the Victorian Volunteer Cadets 1899 to 1906, joined the permanent Military Forces 1906 No 86 age 23 years 4 months and rose through the ranks to Captain when he enlisted in the AIF as a Capt in 4th INF Brigade HQ age 30 years on 23.9.1914, embark for Egypt 22.12.1914, embark for Gallipoli 22.12.1914, promoted to Major 23.5.1915 and transfers to 2nd INF Brigade, awarded MID 12.6.1915, promoted Lt Col and to Command 7th Batt, embark for France 13.4.1916, awarded MID 13.11.1916, awarded Order of the White Eagle (Serbian), he was Gassed but remained on duty at Pozieres, awarded DSO 1.1.1917, appointed Staff Officer HQ 1st Anzac Corps 12.3.1917 then T/Col, T/Brig General through to 7.10.1918, awarded MID and CMG, 1.10.1919 appointed Director General repatriation and demobilisation AIF, resigned appointed in England 21.3.1920. Post WW1 on return to Australia he served in many Military appointments including Honorary Colonel 7th and 38th Battalions.He was made a Knight Batchelor in 1935. On 3.9.1939 to 31.3.1946 No VP16098 during WW2 he served on the Australian Staff Corps, two of his main appointments being man power Dept Labour and national Service and the Women’s land Army, Awarded CB, he retired due to health reasons with the Rank of Lieut General.Framed Photograph. The helmet was captured by William J Hanna, Royal Irish Fusiliers. Hanna was wounded during the 1916 Battle of the Somme.World War One German Army steel helmet. The outer surface is painted. Two lugs/ventilation holes are visible on each side. Rivets securing the missing headband are also visible. The front of the helmet has an extended visor whilst the back and sides also project to cover the nape of the neck and ears. Muriel Slater, Australian Army Nursing Service Appointment, 22nd May 1917 - Record of Service 24.4.1917 to 16.8.1919. Muriel Matthew Slater started her nursing training the day of her 21st birthday. When she became a fully trained nurse she joined the army nursing service and sailed for India on the Khiva. She was stationed ar Dealali Internment Camp - mostly German and Turkish POW's. After 2 years in India she was sent via Egypt to the UK and spent some months between Harefield Hospital in London and others in the UK. She sailed home on the Karragolia where she met Lt T H. Scholfield MC, MM (21st Bat). They married in 1922 and had a son and 2 daughters. Made by Albert Henry Rogers who served in the British Army during WW1, the grandfather of the donor. It was made as a symbol of hope as receiving letters from home gave them hope. Hence the bullet made into a letter opener is a symbol of something made to kill into something to give hope. (Transcribed from the donor's description)Small letter opener consisting of a handle made from a .303 bullet and a blade made from an unknown metal. The projectile has been split in half lengthways and the blade soldered in. The markings on the cartridge indicate that it is a Mk VII cartridge manufactured by the Royal Laboratory in 1917.Both sides of the blade have decorative engraving on them. The left side has "ARRAS" engraved on it and the right side has "1918 YPRES" engraved on it. The base of the cartridge is marked R^L 17 and VII.ypres, arras, world war 1
