Uniform - CHEVRON & PATCHES, 1915-19
Harry Cowley No 2615 enlisted in the 6th reinforcements to the 22nd Batt AIF on 8.7.15. Embarked for Eygpt 27.10.15. Transferred to the 7th Batt AIF on 24.2.16. Embarked for France 26.3.16. Hospitalised 4.7.17 with injured knee, hospital again 26.6.18 with Catarrh. WIA 11.8.18 GSW to right shoulder. Discharged from the AIF on 6.7.19. Chevrons were worn inverted on the right sleeve of the uniform below the elbow. Colour patches were worn as shown on each arm.Items relating to H. ERNEST BERNARD LUECKE No 2104 enlisted in the 38th Batt AIF on 3.3.1916 age 20 years. He embarked with the 3rd reinforcements 38th Batt on 25.9.1916. He arrived in France 21.12.1916. Hospitalised with Myalgia 8.1.1917 then Influenza 7.2.1917. He returned to his unit 22.5.1917. KIA between 7 - 9 June 1917. No known grave. Plaque, Post 1918 (estimated)
Henry Southby pre WW1 served 5 years in the Militia and 22 years on the Permanent staff. He is listed as No 2240 serving in the 4th Batt Aust Commonwealth Horse during the Boer War from March to September 1902. By the time he enlisted in the AIF he was 41 years 2 months of age on 22.3.16 with the rank of Lieut in the 39th Batt. Embarked for England 27.5.16, embark for France 23.11.16, promoted Captain 23.4.17, WIA 7.6.17 shell wound to back, return to France 30.7.17, KIA 12.10.17 at Passchendaele. It is believed he was W.I.A and while being carried out by Stretcher Bearers a shell burst killing them all. No known grave. The plaque was one of many that were placed on trees in Condon St. Bendigo as a memorial to those who lost their lives. Refer 1903.2, 1905P.Bronze plaque set in a wood frame re; H.SOUTHBY. William Leslie Tibbett No VX28381 enlisted on 19.6.40 in 2/21st Batt AIF age 20 years. As part of Gull Force they were posted on the Island of Ambon to defend the Harbour and Airstrip. In January 1942 some 20,000 Japanese troops invaded the Island. Off the Gull Force of 1131 men 779 were either KIA or died as POW’s. His death is listed as 1.10.43.
