Soldier tradesmen belonging to the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Corps (RAEME) were attached to and Armoured Corps regiment as a Light Aid Detachment (LAD) to provide battlefield repairs to armoured vehicles. Captain Jim Farrelly joined 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles as a trooper. He rose through the ranks then as a consequence of his civilian trade as a mechanic he transferred to RAEME and took command of the regiment's LAD.Framed coloured print of painting of Light Aid Detachment making major repairs to a Centurion tank in the Vietnam battlefield. This newspaper supplement has a series of pictures specially drawn by 'Sphere" artists to show a pictorial record of the journey of the Unknown Warrior from a lonely grave on the battlefield to a tomb in Westminster Abbey on 11th November 1920. 11 November 1920 On 11 November 1920, the second anniversary of the Armistice, the commemoration became a funeral when the remains of an unknown soldier were returned from the battlefields of the Western Front. The remains were interred with full military honours in Westminster Abbey in London. In attendance were King George V, Queen Mary, The Queen Mother, The Queen of Spain and Princess Mary. From the AWM: Anvil Wood was a small wood to the north of Peronne that marked the centreline of an attack by the 14th Brigade on the morning of 1 September 1918. The northern approaches to Peronne were covered by numerous field and machine-guns, but the leading battalions of the brigade - the 53rd and 54th - pushed their attack home with determination, and sent the German defenders fleeing back to Peronne. This item was hung in the Gallery of Honour, foyer of the Soldiers Memorial Institute since 11.11.1929. Commissioned by Drum Major WM DARWIN to comrades & citizens of his native city, Bendigo. After closure of the SMI for renovations 2016 - 18 the item was placed in what is now called the "Building and RSL History Room" William Darwin No 780 enlisted on 18.8.1914 age 22 years in G Coy 7th BN AIF. Embark for Eygpt 19.10.1914, Hospital 15.3.1915 - 3.5.1915, embark for Gallipoli 5.4.1915, promoted to Act/Sgt 28.8.1915, on 28.9.1915 he was buried in an explosion and dug out 3/4 hours later, was unconcious for 2/3 days and had a leg wound. In amongst this he appears to have got Typhoid and never comes out of Hospital till 13.3.1916. Frame 5. Photo 1. Lonely graves on a battlefield. This has been identified as "Vaire Wood cemetery" just south of the Somme at Vaire-sous-Corbie. Some 28 diggers from Vaire Wood were later reburied at Crucifix Corner Cemetery at Villers Bretonneux. Photo 2 and 3. Two photos, troop train luxury travel. This is possibly 45th quota men 'en route' from Gamaches to Havre in early 1919. From Havre they sailed for England on the "Prince George". Photo 4. Bert Grinton receiving his "DCM" from Lady Denman for actions around Clery on 31/8/1918. His CITATION reads: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Clery on 31st August 1918. he became detached from his Company and joined another party in the advance. mainly through his assistance with a Lews Gun, they cleared an enemy trench, killing about 30 and capturing several machine guns. he got on top of the trench and under heavy fire silenced a field gun which was firing over open sights.
