Water has since risen in the shaft to above the 4,154 ft. plat and the large workings at 4,254 feet and 4,154 feet have also been filled. As there are no reef workings from 4154 feet to 3,424 feet, the waters will no doubt rise rapidly until that level is reached'. Handwritten copy of a newspaper report on an explosion at the New Chum Consolidated Mine. The explosion occurred about 7.30 am on Friday 21/1/1881 when a fire broke out in the engine house. Some dynamite and caps had been placed in the engine house for convenience sake. Seven men were injured. They were T. Sheppard, Mine Manager, Charles Porter, Enginedriver, Geo Dobridge, Lander, Peter Summers, miner, Richard Hosking, miner, Jacob Grigg. Article transcribed from the Bendigo Advertiser, 20th August 1986.Handwritten copy of a report in the Bendigo Advertiser 19th, 20th and 21st August 1894 of an explosion and fire at the South Belle Vue Mine Enginehouse. Water pressure was a problem with their fire fighting efforts. While this was happening a messenger came to say the Engine house at the True Blue Mine was also on fire. Both fires were believed to be deliberately lit. A resident saw a man carrying a lighted torch through the bush. August 30th, 1899 of a fatality at the St. Mungo Mine where a miner, Richard Nettle was injured when a large slab of mullock fell on him. He died later in the hospital. Handwritten and typed copy of a report in the Bendigo Advertiser Mon 11/1/1892 of a fire which totally destroyed the engine-house at Lazarus Coy's mine at New Chum on Sunday 10th January at 2 a. m. Last page has a copy of a letter to the Editor of the Advertiser from William Nolan, Captain, G. S. V. F. B. contradicting Superintendent Daymond's statement that said the City Brigade had first water on the fire and the Golden Square was next. William Nolan says they had water on the fire ten minutes before the City Brigade arrived. He was hoping the Superintendent would rectify his mistake. Newspaper article from the Bendigo Advertiser, dated Thursday, May 4, 1967 on the Central Nell Gwynne Mine. It has a picture of the poppet legs of the Central Nell Gwynne Mine with an old gold digger's dish in the foreground and a bush on the right. The article mentions tourists ask to see a gold mine, but none are working.
