This snagging team is on the Brodribb River, east of Orbost. The Brodribb bridge can be seen in the background of the Photograph. The Snowy River was used for commercial navigation after 1880 and extensive de-snagging A shipping company was formed in 1880, poling barges upstream until the removal of large trees and branches that had fallen into the river was carried out to make the river upstream of Marlo easier to navigate. "The snaggers played an important part in making the river free for transport. By 1880 Captain Collins, R McNair engineer, J McNair and the two Winchesters were at work with a punt on the Snowy and Brodribb. Mr. Jim Winchester took charge soon after. Early snaggers were Johnston, J Renton, Nat Lynch, John Drew, Hatton, J Scott and Harry Wilkinson. The system used was to use a tree on the river bank as a lever and with heavy manila ropes, slowly to haul the snags out. They were piled up around a tree and burned when dry. The snaggers lived in a row of cottages in Snaggers’ Lane." (info. This photo shows a river boat under construction on the eastern bank of the Murray river in the Echuca Port area where the boat shed and swimming pool were located in the 1970's. The boat shed can be seen through the trees but the swimming pool isn't visible. There is another river boat behind, possibly the Canberra.This photograph is of historical and social significance in that it shows the condition of the Murray river in the 1970's at an area used as the local swimming area on the Echuca side of the river. There is a river boat under construction (the frame work shows a bottom and top storey on the boat). This could be the Pride of the Murray. It is difficult to see the name on the river boat behind but it looks like the Canberra. This is a letterhead from Proudfoot’s Boathouse in Warrnambool. Thomas Proudfoot built the boathouse near the mouth of the Hopkins River in 1885 and it was an accommodation and dining place for tourists, especially for those interested in fishing and other recreational pursuits and it was the base for the Hopkins Rowing Club. Proudfoot built additions in 1888 and 1893 and after he died in 1900 his wife Catherine continued on the business for over 30 years, transferring the licence to her son. In 1939 Thomas Proudfoot’s granddaughter, Ena Hunt gained the licence and operated the business with her husband Percy until 1979. It is Percy Hunt’s name on the letterhead described here. The business today is mainly centred around catering and dining. In the 1990s other buildings were added to the boathouse complex, with the original buildings now being heritage-listed. This item is of some interest as it is the only memento we have of the Hunt family’s 40 years proprietorship of Proudfoot’s Boathouse, a significant set of buildings in Warrnambool.This is a single sheet of cream coloured paper with blue and red printing and a blue-coloured photograph of Proudfoot’s Boat House. This boat hook head is in very good condition and has been manufactured. It would be attached to a pole or handle to give it a long reach. A boat hook can be used for many situations such as catching mooring ropes and chains, reaching rigging, pulling things or people out of the water, and a variety of fishing applications.This boat hook head is an example of equipment carried on vessels over hundreds of years for safety purposes and for general applications. A postcard with a black and white image of small boats being towed on a rope through water. Each boat is carrying several soldiers, and other ships and boats can be seen in the background. From the title it is a landing party going ashore near Gaba Tepe, on the Gallipoli peninsula. The back of the post card is blank so it was kept more as a souvenir than sent as a letter. There are other similar postcards in the collection.Images of Gallipoli were captured on postcards as mementoes. Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War. The Snowy River Boat Club was formed in 1950, went into recess in 1972 but re-formed in 1977. It was a power boating club based in Marlo.A brim and band from a Snowy River Boat Club hat.
