Bacchus Marsh Express of 7 November 1874 reports that this building was designed and erected by Mr Jeremiah Ryan for Mr H. G. Salter, draper. Mr Salter gave the name of "Hall of Commerce" to the building, a term in common usage at the time. The building was of a substantial size. In the Express of January 4 1879 Messrs Basham and Bradley advertised a wide variety of goods including drapery, millinery, ready-made clothing, boots and shoes and furniture. At the front of the building was the first pavement in the township. This photo forms a contrast with the photograph (also taken by Stevenson & McNicoll in 1883) of Timmons Clothier and Draper, but depicting an older building from 1857. This business was on the verge of closure, Mr Timmons conducting his business as a travelling salesman, taking his goods by horse and cart to outlying districts. The image provides an example of the growing scale of retail development in Bacchus Marsh in the late nineteenth century.This photograph is a record of a prominent commercial building that has undergone substantial change. The bone from this shoe horn probably comes from the horn of a cow. It has been adapted for use in putting on tight-fitting shoes or boots. Animal horn was the original material used to make such an item – hence the name ‘shoe horn’. Today shoe horns are still used but they are usually made of plastic or metal. Mr Sidney (Sydney) Wainwright's father was established in the boot and shoe manufacturing business from 1877 in partnership with Shaddock and then Faulkner in Liebig Street, Warrnambool. By the late 1800s S.J. The construction of these boots suggests that it was not purchased locally or from any large town. It may have been introduced by a wandering caravan trader in clothes and shoes. In this era of rural development shoes, especially children footwear, were regarded as a longer term requirement that only required the soles and heels to be replaced. Multiple shoe types were not common only basics that could be handed down. The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 the Regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. Upon its return in April 1945, the Regiment was redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion. Kastinger Boots Founded by Hermann Kastinger, the company was based in Austria from 1909 to 1981 . After several bankruptcies and changes of ownership, the company Lemipan , based in Pirmasens , Germany , is the current licensee. In 1932, Max Kastinger took over the business from his father. In addition to double-stitched shoes, glued models were also produced for the first time. The decision to use this design laid the foundation for the inexpensive mass production of winter shoes. In 1953 the first successes were also achieved outside of Austria. Sales of the boots took off internationally and were greatly adapted and improved as ski technology also evolved. In 2009, the Kastinger brand celebrated its 100th anniversary. Starting in around 1850, women began wearing boots that resembled the ones already worn by men in high society. Women’s Victorian boots were slightly more feminine in nature, however, than those worn by their male counterparts. Buttoning opening on the outside edge-eight scallops each finely bound and stitched. Each fastened by a tiny 8mm domed painted button, and an immaculate, stitched buttonhole. Sadly, the satin has split, on each opening panel. Some colouring has been chipped from the buttons. This photograph shows George Temple's store which began operating C1888 opposite the post office in the main street of Orbost. The store stocked other stores at Bendoc supplying the gold fields. The men with their pack horses are on their way to the survey camp. George Temple, born in Yorkshire on 26/2/1832 was of the earliest Orbost storekeepers. Temple's Store was on the corner of Ruskin and Nicholson Streets opposite the post office. He packed stores to the Bendoc area goldfields. The store building eventually became part of Herbert's store when he died in 1917. This item is associated with the very early history of Orbost. George and Mary Temple were early shopkeepers who operated a store opposite the Post Office for many years.
