Hugh Taylor Cochrane, a farmer, miner and works contractor, was living at Linton from the early 1860s with his wife Catherine. The Cochranes had six chilfren, at least two of whom became teachers in Linton. Hugh Taylor Cochrane was a shareholder in the Good Hope Company at Linton in 1862. Alex Kennedy (Darkie) was manager of the Victory Mine. He first came to Linton in 1863, having previously worked for the Bridge Head Company at Brown's Diggings. He worked as engine driver at the Pioneer and Argyle Mines in Linton Park. He lived in Linton until his death in 1892. Ewen Rankin migrated from Scotland to Victoria in 1852 with his parents and brothers and sisters. He became an important figure in Linton, being involved with both agricultural and mining activities. He was an Elder of the Presbyterian Church. He was presented with an "illuminated address" when he left Linton in 1884. This is a photograph of John Johnston. John Johnston was elected as a member of the Orbost Council and during thirty-five years of service, he was president four times. He was also president of the Agricultural Society and Chairman of the local School Committee for over thirty years, (from Richard Johnston -1969 in "Personalities and Stories of the Early Orbost District: by Mary Gilbert)John Johnston was a prominent citizen of Orbost in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia. Emil Jackschowsky was born in Insterburg (Prussia then Germany now Russia). He met Mary Schwerkolt aboard the 'Seydlitz' on its way to Australia. He was working as a ships steward. They married in Pittsburg in U.S.A in 1912. While visiting family in Germany he was conscripted. His son Walter was born in 1919. Emil became an American citizen in 1928. The bed jacket, a woman's garment, is a waist-length robe worn to cover the chest, shoulders and arms while sitting up in bed. Its short length and cape-like cut allowed it to be put on (or removed) while in bed. Often made of sheer or lacy fabrics and displaying very feminine trimmings and details, it was often used more for seduction, rather than warmth or modesty. There are three copies of this photograph, the first was formerly in a frame and was in the possession of the Shire of Grenville until it was donated to LDHS. (Frame is in room 01 at Resource Centre. It is understood photograph was removed from frame with a view to having it restored.) The second copy of the photograph is mounted photograph 233 and the third is a copy held in the Clarke family file. John Clarke was the owner of Emu Hill station. (See photograph of Emu Hill homestead, Registration number 2013-01). Between 1872 and 1917 he was also a Shire of Grenville councillor, and served as Shire President in 1878, 1889, 1898, 1906 and 1912. John's wife was Mary Jane Newcomen, daughter of William (W.W.R.)
