Five Musicians. Raffaele Altwegg: cello, Maureen Jones: piano, Brenton Langbein: violin, Ottavio Corti: viola, Barry Tuckwell: french horn. Music Advancement Society Bendigo. Five Musicians as an ensemble first sprang to life when some of the Musica Viva Executive took Maureen Jones to supper after her last Sydney Concert. That was in 1970 when she played for us with the Robert Pikler Chamber Orchestra at the Sydney Conservatorium. Development of the idea was not difficult for it only involved a variation pf the we;-tried partnership pf the Tuckwell-Jones-Langbein Trio. . . . Maureen Jones gave her first public concert in Sydney at the age of Six: she played the Beethovan Piano . . . Barry Tuckwell was born in Melbourne and studied at the Sydney Conservatorium. He was appointed t the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the age of 15. . . Brenton Langbein studied at the Adelaide Conservatorium and in 1947 was invited to Eugene Goossens to join the Sydney Symphony orchestra where he remained for three years; he then went to Europe where he furthered his studies with. . . . Ottavio Corti although born in Zurich, is of Italian origin. He studied the violin at the Zurich Conservatorium and later under the famed violinist Stefi Geyer. . . . Raffaele Altwegg gained his concert diploma in the cello at the age of 14 at the Conservatoire di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He is solo-cellist of the Collegium Musicum Zurich and . . . Post 1970. Ephemera - HARRY BIGGS COLLECTION: ENVELOPE
Cream coloured envelope with cello tape on the back with some rust marks.. On the front hand written in blue ink by S. M. Deravin writes about the photo's in the envelope. It is entitled 'Aboriginies' Copies of these photographs and a typed copy of the verses have been placed in the original book - F. R. Godfrey's journals in the Australiana Room at the National Library in Melbourne (Latrobe St) where they will remain 'in perpetuity'. With them have been placed copies of the photographs of the Jajoweroung or Loddon tribe of blacks, taken at their camp on 'Boort Station' (now 'Dunbar' homestead block) in 1963 and the stables at the 'Boort' homestead with M. H. Godfrey and his sons, with Prince Charlie of the Jajoweroung and of the poem 'The Jajoweroung' These photos and descriptions are in 2400.419a and 419b, also 2400 420a and 420b.S. M. Bendigo Concert Orchestra played in 1944. Jean Boulton and Myrtle Robbins were early members with Ruth Weldon. Earlier there was a Railway institute Orchestra. The Orchestra met in various venues finally in St Mary's Hall where they began as the Bendigo Symphony Orchestra. Conductors remembered were Oscar Flight(?) Gwen Bowles, Max O'Loughlin. The Orchestra supported the Operatic Society see two books by Merle Welch. Document - Let Me Go to Bendigo (No. 181 Allan's Popular Sixpenny Edition), 1908
Frederick "Fred" Fifield Hall was born in Carlton, Victoria in 1878. Son of Frederick Hall and Jessie Wallace Hall (nee Lloyd), Fred would marry Elsa May Daegner in 1899 with whom he had a son named Anthony. Hall died on 27th September 1956 in Mont Albert, Victoria and was buried at the Box Hill Cemetery. Hall was known as a solo pianist and the first conductor of the Station Orchestra at 3LO (ABC Radio Station). He was also a notable music editor at Allan & Co. Earning early recognition at 16 years of age when he conducted the Sydney Orchestra, Hall was a versatile composer having written in a variety of styles including solos for the piano, violin and cello, operas, foxtrots and orchestral suites. Publications indicate that between 300 and 400 of his compositions were published. The most famous of which was "Goodbye Melbourne Town" which he wrote with Lyricist Leonard Nelson. "Let Me Go to Bendigo" was another of their joint compositions. Leonard Nelson Snell, professionally known as Leonard Nelson, was born c. 1874 in Melbourne and grew up in Kew (he was 76 in 1950). Nelson married Lily Maud Haight in Victoria in 1897 and had six children named Roy, Dorothy, Leonard, Lionel, Austin and Marie. Nelson died on the 13 August 1962 in Blackheath, NSW and was buried at the local cemetery. Nelson had a varied resume including Cattle station work, song writing and public speaking. Nelson was known for his enjoyment of Australian poetry having known many of the greats personally and could recite works from memory. In his later life, Nelson worked as an entertainer for hire at banquets and other social gatherings. No. 181 Allan's popular sixpenny edition "Sung with great success by Leonard Nelson" Allan & Co. The music was written by Fred Hall and the lyrics were written and sung by Leonard Nelson who is pictured on the cover. Magazine - HANRO COLLECTION: HANRO AUTUMN WINTER CATALOGUE 1962, 1962
The Hanro company was established in Switzerland in 1884. In 1926 a site in Hargreaves Street Bendigo, behind the School of Mines, was purchased to establish the Bendigo Knitting Mills, a subsidiary of Hanro. The managing director was Charles Handerchin who came from Switzerland. The company was delisted from the Australian Stock Exchange in 1963 when it was taken over by John Brown Industries.Hanro Autumn-Winter Catalogue 1962: The cover is of card with a white background with a large H in blue to the right. Sketched in black pen is a lady with a cardigan buttoned up with six buttons, long sleeves and a collar. To the right in white is *Hanro* under that in black print is *Catalogue Autumn-Winter 1962 Swiss Inspired Knitwear* Inside the cover is advertising. Attached with cello tape is a green sheet of paper with a sketch of a lady wearing a sweater with long sleeves and collar and bow. To the right is a medal, circular in shape with *Fashion Award Australian wool bureau* under that is Hanro, Gold Medal Winner 1962 Wool Fashion Awards*, a description of the garment, size and colour. Look better in a Hanro Sweater!* The catalogue is on gloss paper with sketched so ladies modelling Pullovers, cardigans, twin sets and jackets. Each item has its garment number description, sizes and colour. A recording of a speech by PM Robert Menzies at Legacy House during the launch of Legacy Week in 1960. The Prime Minister is recognising the importance of the welfare carried out by Legacy for the families of service personnel who have died as a result war or since. The event was covered in the press, with a photo appearing in The Age on 6 September 1960. The article was saved in a scrapbook of press clippings.
