A colour slide of 9 girls at a ballet barre in a senior girls class probably taken at the same time as The Rose dance formation in 1958 (02853). That would make it the dance room at Legacy House Swanston St. The blue and red walls haven't been seen in other photos of that era as they are normally in black and white. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. A group of widows at exercise classes in a pool at Melbourne City Baths. Melbourne Legacy ran an excellent exercise program for its widows for many years and the swim classes were very popular. The instructor for many years was Betty Luders. In one photo she can be seen at the poolside, that photo was printed on then cover of the Melbourne Legacy Widows' Newsletter in July 1991. The photo was on the front of The Age and classes took place at the City Baths twice a week and Betty instructed them in aqua aerobics, as well as setting up the first teacher courses for Victorian Council for Swimming beginning in 1985. Betty was often coerced into helping fill in at some of Pat Hanna's performances entertaining the troops, as well as assisting Enez Domec Carre with the Miss Victoria pageants at the Windsor Hotel in the 1950s. The children in this combined infant class attended Bulla Primary School in 1993. In rural schools it was common practice to combine a number of classes in the one room with the one teacher.The two pre-digital photographs were taken at the same time and feature an infant class in their classroom with their teacher at Bulla Primary School in 1993. The classroom was one of the portable buildings used extensively in government schools from the 1950s to cope with a growing school population. The Working Men’s College was founded in 1881 by a prominent grazier and philanthropist, The Hon. Francis Ormond, who donated £5000 towards the establishment of the college. The Council of the Melbourne Trades Hall then matched Ormond's initial donation by rallying its members. On 4 June 1887, the college opened in its purpose-built building on the corners of Bowen Street and La Trobe Street in Melbourne, with a gala ceremony. It became the third official provider of higher education in the new Colony of Victoria (the Melbourne Athenaeum was founded in 1839 and the University of Melbourne in 1853). The college was the predecessor to the current-day Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University). Adjoining the college in the 1890s were the Supreme Court of Victoria (later the Melbourne Magistrates' Court) and the Melbourne Gaol - both which are now part of RMIT today. From 1928 until the 1980s, Melbourne Legacy ran an excellent exercise program for its widows. Classes were held weekly at Legacy House and there was often a waiting list for the water classes, which had both swimming instruction and water exercises. Some of the class members were in their 90s, many just learning to swim.
