Named after another ship operating from 1911, RMS Maloja was a passenger liner of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, operating between 1923 and 1954. In 1924: London/Colombo/Melbourne/Sydney service. The "letters to Lillie" show the international nature of the Mission to Seafarers. They are an important display of the handwriting style of the time, revealing courting attempts and give us an insight into life in 1925.Lillie Duncan was a member of the Harbour Lights Guild and this letter forms part of a collection of letters sent to her by different seafarers.Letter addressed to Miss L Duncan, 11 Paxton St, East Malvern, Melbourne, Australia from Ted in three parts: Envelope (0112.1) Letter page 1 (0112.2) Letter page 2 (0112.3). Both the envelope and the letter are creamy yellow in colour with black curly writing. Both sides of each page of the letter are written on. The first page of the letter begins with "Write. c/o Graham Trading Co. Calcutta. cancelled" placed at the top left of the page and "S.S. Matheran Calcutta 28-8-27" placed at the top right of the page. The first line begins with "Dear Lillie, Very many thanks for...". The reverse side of the first page starts "...thickness of solid steel fracturing is it not?". The second page begins with "...be home two months..." and the reverse side concludes with "Hope if you write to me you will use the address below, that will find me. 'Lyndale 117 Greenway Road, Taunton, Somerset, England".The envelope is torn across the top for access to its contents. The address has been typed in black ink. It has one red stamp to the top right hand corner of the envelope with the text "Ceylon 9c". This timetable was found by Dave Maxwell behind an old photograph. David's family came to Warrnambool in 1838.The timetable is an example of travel in the late 19th century. It shows the frequency of voyages between London and Adelaide and the time taken to make the journeys by steamship in 1895. Orient Steam Navigation Company's timetable for steamship voyages outward bound from London to Adelaide, and inward bound back to London, for 1895. The document has black print on cream-coloured paper and is mounted onto a card backing. The timetable lists voyage n from January 1885 to January 1886, with details of month, date and times. The itinerary begins from London to Naples, Port Said, Colombo, King George's Sound and finally to Adelaide (Semaphore), taking 35 days for the journey. The steamship then returns to London. The timetable was approved by Her Majesty's Postmaster-General on the 14th September 1894. The Takadaussie - Journal of H.M.A.T "Takada" voyaging Devonpart to Australia - Souvenir Copy August 1919 Colombo Built in 1914 by the British India Steam Navigation Company originally for the Indian-chinese trade. The Takada was used as a hospital ship making numerous trips with sick and wounded soldiers. Postcards were a common form of souvenirs for soldiers who were travelling either during World War 1, or just after, or while returning to Australia. These postcard scenes are from Bombay which is a stop on the route from Australia to Europe. India was often the first time young soldiers saw a different culture on their way to the first World War. These were with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. There was a large collection of postcards so he may have been collecting them as souvenirs (none of these have been written on or posted). J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', (which stopped in Bombay), arriving Portsea in 1920.Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War. Postcards as souvenirs or as correspondence would have been familiar to the first Legatees as they had served in World War 1.
