Used by the MMTB to indicate to Inspectors and the public, the driver or conductor traffic number or their personnel number. This number would appear on all reporting documents.Demonstrates a MMTB employee or traffic number badge.Set of two badges - numbered, "2116" and "2119", nickel plated brass to give a silver finish, with the numbers fixed to a bar top and bottom and two lugs on the rear to clip into a cap. Have been mounted onto a card with the clips used in practice. Containing a colour copy photograph of Conductor Archie Viccars, leaning out of a bogie tram. He has cap number 2 with the conductor's bag slung over his shoulder. The donor noted that Archie worked as a Trammie from the 50's to the 60's when he transferred to the Ripon St offices on clerical duties. Has a strong association with the family of SEC Conductor Archie Viccars and demonstrates the uniform of the time.Wooden frame, with carved out front edge, inner gold lining, varnished with title "Archie Viccars 1950 Ballarat". Use by tramways to indicate the position of the person to a passenger or another employee. Most likely made as a general production item by Stokes for tramways and railways.Demonstrates an item made to indicate the wearers position on the tramway.Uniform Badge for a "Conductor". Manufactured by Stokes and Sons, Melbourne. Made from a cast brass item and then nickel plated. Cast in the form of the handwritten or script word/s and underlined and rounded to fit on a cap. On the rear, silver soldered on are two brass loops at either of the badge to enable to be sewn or fitted with clips onto a cap. Black and white photograph of a horse tram at the Kew Cemetery terminus with a uniformed MTOC. employee, two horses and the Cemetery buildings in the background. Has Victoria Bridge & Cemetery written on the side of the tram. 2nd copy added with different crop. Photo from the Collection of the Department of Infrastructure now with the Public Records Office - image number H1. Note: this photo is now out of copyright and was not an original VR photograph, but one copied from another source and collected as their Heritage series. From an email from Rod Atkins 29/7/2019: This Stevenson six widow saloon horse tram No 46 is fairly standard. The horse cars did not have wheel skirts like the cable trams 6 and 8 window cars. Sitting at the terminus in High Street at Parkhill Road at the gates of the Boroondara General Cemetery ready for its return trip to Richmond. The tram is being run one man. Note the location of gates, pay as you enter the front step. The driver has a conductors bag around his neck and waist. No conductor present in the photo. His uniform is classic Company issue. He is wearing a Tunic and vest! And early issue cap with a white band. Date: around circa 1900 as the clock tower, brick wall and cast iron fence are all in place and the car number is faded out. I have seen a photo of a tram there with no clock tower from around the opening of the line.Has part of the Department of Infrastructure copy right stamp on rear and number in ink on rear and "1-5"trams, tramways, horse trams, kew, mto co, cemetery, uniforms -

Black and white negative, by Wal Jack, of W5 801 turning from Lygon St into Holmes Road via Albion St, East Brunswick. The tram has the destination of East Coburg. The tram is fitted with a head light mask. There appears to be a solider on the tram, along with a trammies in uniform cap sitting down in the drop centre. The conductor could be on the other side of the tram. In the background is a tram stop shelter, a wall advert for the Liberty Theatre, a fire alarm pillar and a drinking fountain. Lapel Badge for the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co. staff. Has an abbreviation of "MTOCo" to indicate the tramway operator and worn as part of their uniform. No manufacturer's name on the rear of the badge, though possibly made by Stokes & Sons Melboune. Three copies held, two fitted with a clip - as shown in the photograph. The photograph shows Sylvia Mitchell (No. 42) and Tom Young (17) standing by the doorstep of a single trucker tramcar. Note no lining on the tram, door opening mechanism, uniforms, conductors bag, and badge numbers 17 and 41 respectively. See item 3600 for another photograph in good condition. On the rear of the photo is written Sylvia Mitchell (conductress) and Alf Mercer (driver). The cap number 17 aligns with Tom Young - see item 2980. Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways in the the mid 1940's when Conductresses were employed during the war. Functional object - Conductor's baton
A lightweight wooden baton 51 centimetres long, one and a half centimetres diameter at one end tapering to half a centimetre at the other. The thicker end has a metal cap and a one centimetre wide leather strip wound around it for ten centimetres of the baton.
