The former "Zion" Congregational Church was on the corner of Walker Street and Beverin Street in Sebastopol. Its origins began as 'Zion" Welsh Independent Church in Albert Street, Sebastopol. The Uniting Church in Australia was inaugurated in June 1977, at which time the Sebastopol Methodist Church joined with the Zion Congregational Church on Walker Street, Sebastopol and became Sebastopol Uniting Church. The block to the south of the church was purchased in 1982, the occupying house demolished and the area cleared and later sealed for parking. In 1984 the interior of the church was renovated and plans were drawn up for further additions and alterations to the Sunday school, which were carried out in 1989, adding a kitchen and toilet built by Jeff Menhennett & SonsWhite soft covered booklet of 20 pages with blue printing. An earlier building by Charles Vickers was replaced by a new brick church designed by Albert Purchas. The file contains numerous original and copied primary sources as well as short histories and correspondence between the Kew Historical Society and the Historic Buildings Preservation Council when it was proposed to demolish the church. Following the demolition of the Church, an aged care facility - Bodalla - was erected (since demolished). The file contains some information on Bodalla and a foundation stone relating to the former Church which was placed on the site. In the file, there is a photocopy of a brass plaque from 1860 that refers to the architect being George Wharton and the builders Messrs. Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc.Plate, Saucer, Early 20th century
This saucer came from the Warrnambool Congregational Church and was probably part of a set of crockery used by the church members at social gatherings. The Warrnambool Congregational Church was founded in 1862 when Robert Winton and Thomas Nayler conducted a meeting in Warrnambool to consider the possibility of forming a local Independent church. The first minister was William Pentland and the first church was in Liebig Street. A notable member of the Congregational Church was Samuel Nettleton who was the Superintendent of the Sunday School for 60 years. In 1940 a new church was opened in Henna Street. In 1973 there was a merger of the Congregational Church and the Methodist Church, resulting in the formation of the Uniting Church in 1977. In 1976 the former Congregational Church in Henna Street was sold to the Salvation Army. This saucer is of interest as a memento of the former Congregational Church in Warrnambool. It comes from the early 20th century days when the church would have had a strong following in the city. This is a cream-coloured saucer with double gold edging around the outer rim. There are other family photos related to the Jacobs family in the collection. Win married Rev Stephen Edwin Yarnold at the the Presbyterian manse, North Essendon in July 1946. The Sutton grange Congregational Church was built in 1865. Original services were held in the home of Mr James Grey who served the church for 50 years. The Bendigo Congregational church originally operated out of the Mechanics Institue building before moving temporarily to the Church of England school room. In May 1858, a meeting was held to establish a permanent building and tenders were called in September 1858. Land was purchased in Forest Street from the estate of Mr WIlkinson and the new brick structure was opened 28/11/1858.Manilla folder titled: Congregational Church Bendigo and district. This cup, made in Melbourne, is a 1946 award for a table tennis competition in the Warrnambool district. The P.C.S.A. may stand for Presbyterian & Congregational Sports Association, with the trophy being won by the Congregational Church team. The donor’s initials, W.Y.M.C., may stand for Warrnambool Young Men’s Club. The Warrnambool Congregational Church was founded in 1862 with a church opened in Liebig Street in 1864. This church was sold and a new one opened in Henna Street in 1940. In 1979, after the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church, the Henna Street church was sold to the Salvation Army.This cup is of interest as an example of a Warrnambool sports trophy given over 70 years ago.This is a small silver cup mounted on a brown Bakelite base.
