Cornish Association of Bendigo & District Inc. Newsletter Volume 7: Number 4: December 2001. Titled Early Ethnic Gold Pioneers. Members met at the Chinese Museum before taking a walk down the street to view the Centenary of Federation display which is housed in the Museum, situated in the Old Post Office. Sir John Quick is also mentioned. According to Lorna Erwin, Publicity Officer for the Bendigo Cornish Association, the display covers some of the major aspects of mining, education, communications, health, religion, sporting and social life in Bendigo over the last 100 years and provides an interesting and informative comparison between life in Bendigo in 1901 and life today. Two reasons for placement of Plaques in The New Chum Park. One is to acknowledge the contribution that both the Cornish and German people who lived and worked in Long Gully made to the establishment of City of Greater Bendigo. The second, Famous Journalist Anthony Trollop visited Bendigo just as Underground Mining was starting to blossom. His remarks of Bendigo were uncomplimentary as that of Ballarat, which he complimented as a beautiful city. Twenty years later thanks to U/ground mining Bendigo rivalled Ballarat as a beautiful city to which the residents of Long Gully played a major role. Cornish Association Newsletter Volume 9, Number 2, June 2003 mentions the unveiling of the Long Gully Mining Monument on May 25th. The unveiling was carried out by John Bolitho Grand Bard of Cornwall in conjunction with Cr Darrel McClure. The ceremony was followed by afternoon tea supplied by the Long Gully History Group and organised by Carol Rasmussen of the Long Gully Community House. Some special guests were Gwen Phillips president of the C.A.V. and Vivian Pryor from Newquay Cornwall. The day was finished by Annual Dinner held at the Kangaroo Sports Club. Plans for other celebrations were underway. A paper, the Cornish in the First World War, was presented by Tom Luke at the Cornish association of South Australia's seminar. Harvey Town was once a large mining area with its own shops, churches and hotels. The four remaining stone cottages were built by the Harvey Family between the 1850s and the 1870s. They were obviously the most substantial buildings in the area at the time. Three of the cottages have been classified as a group by the National Trust and the citation describes them as follows: A group of three simple sandstone cottages built by the Harvey Family of Cornish stonemasons in about 1875. The cottages are all of a very simple design with small windows and no ornamentation. "Fentongove" is situated at 3 Staley Street, California Gully. The home was built in 1867 for Mr Richard Williams who was the mine manager for the Johnsons Reef Mining Company for 36 years. Richard first worked for George Lansell, where he was the manager of a number of mines. He then went to Johnson's Reef Gold Mines as General Mine Manager, where he worked for 36 years. Richard was born in Cornwall in 1831 and died in Bendigo in September, 1903. Mentioned is the visit by the Australian High Commissioner Mr Michael L'Estrange to Trevessa Farm, Cornwall, the birthplace of Sir John Quick. The Cornish Association placed a plaque on Trevessa Farm in 2002. Margaret Bigg, one of the owners of Trevessa Farm can claim to have relatives of the Ellis Family here in Bendigo. On the back is a copy of a Bendigo Advertiser article titled Cornish to honour their patron saint. It was dated March 4, 1992. Article contains some information on St Piran, the patron saint of miners.
